A bubble level is the simplest and best tool.

My own experience is that a bubble level is too imprecise. You simply have to learn to align the frame lines with suitable verticals – just as we do with those pesky horizons.

John,

We had trams here in Oslo, just like that, up untill 35 years ago. I miss them, really.

Hi Just

I think I remember your Oslo trams - I visited in 1967 and (IIRC) there were routes that started out in the hills on the outskirts of the city and then dived into tunnels to become the metro. The trams had varnished teak or mahogany matchboard-sided bodies.

The vehicle in my picture is actually a replica built this year for a 76cm gauge steam railway in UK (the Welshpool & Llanfair). However the original was built by Pickerings of Wishaw, near Glasgow, in 1902, and they were best known as tram builders.

The replica was built by the Boston Lodge Carriage Works of the Ffestiniog Railway. I believe that heir next project is a beaver-tailed Pullman Observation Car for the Welsh Highland Railway... i'm looking forward to photpgraphing it!

The exterior of the W&L car looks like this (CV28 f3.5):
