I was at the camera swapmeet today shopping for what ever interest me.

I saw a mint like new Summarit 5cm f1.5 M39... thought it might be good to compliment my M3 and so I bought it.

Question... would you recomend to mount a UV filter since it is threaded.

Now here's a dumb question...

What is the filter size?

Thanks for your suggestions...

Not so a dumb question... Summarits 50 were manufactured with 2 kind of filter mount: one is a standard E41 thread , the other a sort of bayonet-like mount like the one of the Xenon (you mount the filter ring onto the EXTERNAL face of the lens barrel, with a retaining notch that fits the filter mount) : I do not remember, now, if from a certain s/n only the E41 mount remained, or if both the mounts were used together in a certain timeframe... : my Summarit SM (822.xxx, 1950, with "Taylor-Hobson" engraving), has the bayonet filter mount... when at home, I surely can find the precise info on the books I have. Anyway, if the item you bought HAS a usual filter thread, it MUST be E41, I think

Hi Ron,

Congratulation for your new lens, it's a wonderful one!

... would you recomend to mount a UV filter since it is threaded.

I have a Leitz UVa filter on mine (which is for threaded and bayonet mount filters) only to protect the external lens. I would suggest the use of a lens shade, the original one (code XOONS or XIOOM) are quite bulky and ugly, and last but not least, expensive.

Oh, i forgot, the filter size is: E41

BTW. I also have a yellow bayonet filter for Summarit i don't use.

Thanks Luigi and Philippe.

I'll go ahead and get a 41mm UV filter to protect the lens.

The reason for my inquiry was, before in the old forum there was a debate regarding issues with using a UV filter on pre 1960 Wetzlar glass.

I was not so involved then cause the only Leica I was shooting was a Digilux 2.

Philippe, you were right; the hood for the Summarit is drummer ugly and the price may require an escrow to close.

Maybe I'll just get a 41-46mm step-up ring and a 46mm Chinese Vented Hood.

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

-Ron
