ICC profiles

Hi all I recently received some profiles from a paper manufacturer which have icm tag not icc does anyone know if this file type can be used ?

I changed the file type to icc and installed in the ColorSync/profile folder and it shows up in Lightroom when I apply a soft proofing profile but not sure if it is actually doing anything. I have a self made icc profile for the same paper / printer combo which gives different results 

Equipment used Lightroom classic, epson SCP900 (P906 in Australia) Apple Macmini 

i guess that at the end off the day more testing will need to be done and the proof of the pudding will be in the results so to speak but I ask the question out of interest if others have had experience with these type of profile files. I could get a third party to make a profile but do not wish to go down that path just yet

A: The standard file extension for ICC profiles on Windows is "ICM". A Microsoft decision. Note however, the file format is the same as one ending in "ICC" and they are completely interchangeable. You should not have any difficulty using either file in an ICC-aware application.

Thanks for the explanation I have asked the question of the paper manufacturer and am awaiting a reply

Icc and icm are the same thing, however there are different versions of the icc format (v2 v4 etc) and also icc can contain different content (eg LAB values or XYZ), so unlike say dcp, icc is not a one size fits all solution
