They are, by Leica standards, dirt cheap at £24 + about £6 shipping; they come from Japan and they're made with "Japanese glass" (which I think is supposed to be a good thing ). I freely admit I've chanced it and ordered one. I can't justify the £200 for the Leica magnifier but I've found myself wishing the M8's finder was more "zoomed in" when I'm focusing my 50mm lux – just because I always use it wide open and that doesn't leave much margin of error. I've got about 2-3 weeks to wait before finding out the potentially embarrassing truth about the Etefore, so meanwhile, has anyone else bought one (or something like it) and just how braced should I be? I know there ain't no such thing as a free lunch, but sometimes a burger and fries is all you need... Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

marknorton Posted September 23, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 23, 2007 In the halcyon days before the M8 was launched and, as Andy described them, the dog days of summer 2006, all we could do was to speculate what the camera was going to be called. At that time, Leica M lenses were going begging and I bought a number from this ebayer, aka Poon, aka HK Supplies. £1200 for a 21mm ASPH and 3 day delivery as compared with £2100 and heaven knows how long now. Poon gave me one of these magnifiers as a freebie along with my Noctilux and to use, there's next to no difference compared to the Leica one, which I understand is well-nigh unobtainable now. Only caution is that it might scratch your glasses if you wear them, so I glued a neoprene washer on the back of it to cushion it. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The fit and finish are excellent, and the corrector lens is as clear as a bell. Well worth the money, but as discussed, it's a problem if you wear spectacles. I have not found one that will take a diopter lens as the Leica magnifier does. So, as I am a full time glasses wearer I sold my HK magnifier and stumped up for the Leica goods. If any one knows where any other make that will take a diopter correction lens and not necessarily the Leica version, please let us all know. The Leica magnifier plus a diopter lens will cost up to £260 in the UK which I think is disgusting and probably the worst example of Leica rip-off there is. If you know of a worse example let us know. I believe in global shopping provided the goods are up to the mark and can do the job for which they are intended. The quality of goods coming out of China is getting better by the day and sometimes we should ask ourselves "What is the label worth?" regards ... Jim.
