While on the topic, and taking into consideration that the only cameras acceptable are LIKE NEW or EXCELENT, what would you guys consider the tipping point should be between buying new or second market?

10% discount in relation to retail?

20%?

30%?

Thanks everyone for all your help.

For me it's not as simple as that. For a lens, especially a simple opto-mechanical one where there is little to go wrong unseen, then I am less worried by cosmetic condition: an M lens which is in good optical condition, and focuses smoothly and accurately, can be at a bargain price if there are signs of wear on the focus ring or aperture ring. Nor am I particularly worried by the absence of a box and documentation. Although in general Leica equipment holds its value much more than other brands, I am never considering the investment potential when I am buying - I am buying to use - so aspects that have no impact on functionality are not important to me.

Currency fluctuations make a difference (it could run into the hundreds), but if you are importing, there's also import tax to consider. The UK pound and the US dollar are nearing parity after the pound took a tumble so for those outside the UK it might be worth considering buying from there. Ffordes in Scotland is good. In Europe, Leicashop in Austria and Leica bei Meister are worth looking at. Many others. Otherwise, avoid the currency fluctuations and try BH Photo, or any other Leica specialty dealer in the US promoted here.
