Because they put a scoring possibility there. Shots that were really not my best score 5 out of 5, shots that drew favorable comments in our photo forum by photographers I respect score 1 out of 5. If any idiot can put a number on my work anonymously I'm out of there....

Does that count only for the "idiots" that rate low or also for those rating high?

Quite frankly anyone who pays too much attention to ratings is deluding them self IMHO.

That's why I'm happy that we don't have rating here. You should be confident in your abilities as a photographer and that should be enough. If others like your photographs that's a bonus.

This reminds me of an external judge visiting my photographic club to judge our monthly competition once.........he remarked "every photograph here is worth 10 out of 10, otherwise the photographer would not have put them in the competition if it wasn't their considered best work. It is only the photographer that the image need to please after all. My job is merely to advise you which of these winners that I like best!".

It is like that with every judgement or selection of images....it is a totally subjective process, but I did warm to that judge even though he didn't select my image!

I'm not so sure - there are good photographs and bad photographs irrespective of the photographer's own opinion. I also think that it is possible to recognise a good photograph without actually liking it. Don't ask me to list the criteria by which we should make objective judgements about art but I've never been able to buy into the idea that evaluating art is inherently subjective.
