M body average used prices over the past few years...and in the next few years

Hi all,

I'm looking at my first M body, if not now then in a few years to celebrate an occasion in my life. I'm particularly interested in the M10 (regular version in black paint) and I've seen prices ranging from £3800 (quite good condition from reliable retailers) to a little over £5000 (not in my range!). If I were to get a body now, it will have to be an M240 or a variant, but with the type of photography I do, I feel the lower ISO will restrict me and I would want to sell it on quickly afterwards. There are plenty of M240's around between the £1800 to £2800 mark, but I'm hoping that in a few years the M10 will be close to what the M240 is now at the upper end. How realistic do you guys think an M10 will get down to £2800 in a few years from now? What were the lowest prices you've seen year on year since it's release? I'm new to the Leica price market so I've got no prior experience to the historical price reductions over any Leica. Of course, there's the factor of component shortages, price rises, cost of living, newer tech, etc to consider, so this post is up for debating all of this.

Thanks all

Agree. On future pricing - who knows. If we are in for some heavy inflation, used prices could mirror new prices. I also suspect demand for good M10's will keep prices where they are for some time.

Hello and welcome.
There is no "regular version" M10 in black paint (Leica terms for glossy lacquer paint), only black chrome anodized.
Tte tendency with Leica is that the prices fall and then rise back in a while (seen in analog Leica universe), but digital Ms have only been around for 15 years so it is hard to tell... no "regular" digital M price has risen back dramatically yet.
There will SURELY be a price drop for M10 to 3000 - 3300 euros like you seem to seek, just give it a while. The lowest I have seen for a M10 was 3500 two weeks ago.
I do wholeheartedly suggest you get the M10 over M240 regardless. The difference is quite notable.

Thanks. Still going through the minefield of model numbers and each of their functions (or lack of compared to earlier versions), so please excuse my ignorance! I've only seen one at £3500 in the sold prices on ebay, but I'd rather buy used from a retailer for that piece of mind. I'm in no rush, so I might buy lenses first with adapters for my existing cameras. It seems the M10 does fall more closely in spec with the more regular mirrorless cameras on the market, and though they're not too far off the m240 prices, I think they difference in spec is justifiable, especially if got at a super deal and condition

UK prices seem to have risen recently. Major dealers sell internationally, and recent events haven't exactly helped the strength of the pound. I saw several in nice condition in the £3500-£3700 range a couple of months ago, but only one with a scratched screen on ebay at the moment.

If you have no urgent need to buy now, wait and see. We live in uncertain times; who can predict the timing and rate of change of prices?

On the other hand,  you could be gaining useful experience with an MP240, and Leica lenses, at a  price you can afford now. I have the latter, and it is no slouch in low light. There are always work-around solutions. You decide.

Wikipedia has a helpful chart of the digital Ms at the bottom of the Leica Camera page:

I've since bought a mint M240 from MPB for £1800, it was sold to me for £1919 but it didn't come with the hotshoe cover and strap as it said it did - they gave me £100 off so I'm chuffed with that. It's a great machine, and just got a CV 35mm 1.4 II to get me going - I'm loving the experience

I think  that is good value.

Compared to a new price of Fuji XPro3 or a used CL, I think it's fantastic value, it has really got me to think and work around the ISO limitations compared to my previous 5DMK3, where I was just whacking it on 6400. "Seeing the light" and working at lower ISO's has made me respect my own work more, and to try and retain as much DR as possible at the same time.
