I'm on a shoot in Glacier Ntnl Park but 2 newly charged batteries register a low charge in the camera readout. Has anyone else had an issue with the batteries or charger? Thanks! Advertisement Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Hi Skip Heitzig, Take a look here Battery Woes. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wparsonsgisnet Posted September 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2007 The consensus is probably, Yes. I regularly notice poor behavior on the part of my M8 when the battery indicator shows that the battery is in the last 1/3 charge. As a result, I have gotten in the habit of changing the battery when only the last segment of the indicator shows. This works fine.
jaapv Posted September 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 20, 2007 Off-brand batteries do this often. Leica ones sometimes. Just reset them by draining them all the way.

Are these aftermarlet batteries??? Never had a problem with REAL Leica Batteries but have with aftermarket. I suspect you have aftermarket batteries. If that is the case drain them all the way down in the camera and then recharge. That will get the camera to see that it is fully charged.
wparsonsgisnet Posted September 20, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 20, 2007 I am using 4 (count 'em) Leica brand batteries. I did the burn down/recalibrate thing and I still have the same problems when the battery indicator is in the last segment. The M8 seems to be sensitive to a voltage that differs from "full." I think Mark Norton did a bunch of voltage measurements at different strengths for the batteries. He indicated that in the last third of life, there is a substantial drop off of strength and also indicated that the M8 doesn't like a low voltage. [Hope I have that right; if not, appologies to Mark.] In any case, it works really well for me to swap the battery when the last segment shows in the little thingy on top that is really supposed to show ISO and Lens Length. Skip Heitzig Posted September 21, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted September 21, 2007 Thanks to you all for responding. These are Leica batteries that I am using (not aftermarket) and they never seem to register a full charge even after rechrage. I have drained them once but is it necessary to do this every time or just periodically? Thanks again for all your great insights. Reading this forum is making the M8 experience loads of fun! wparsonsgisnet Posted September 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 21, 2007 Skip, my Leica batteries show a full charge in the display on the camera top (you know, the thingie). I did try the recalibration trick, but it ended up resetting my image counter to L10000001. Before I noticed this, I ended up with a couple of dozen pix with duplicate image names. It wasn't so hard to correct, but annoying to deal with. I had been in L101.... and moved to L102.... For some reason that I cannot discover, I got another reset somehow and am now in L103.... The good news is I'm getting the hang of this renumbering process..... With regard to your batteries not showing a full charge, it may be that the display software is faulty. How 'bout putting one of your newly charged batteries in another M8 to see if a full charge shows?
jaapv Posted September 21, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 21, 2007 Or the charger switching off too soon.
