I like this picture a lot.

 

The colour, framing and composition ads too the 'turkish' atmosphere. I really get a sense of shipment, travel and asian-turkish part of Europe.

The composition, colours, framing etc. are great, but - and I"m sorry to say this - if you hadn't said Istanbul I wouldn't have known. However, this does not detract from merits of the shot!

I like this pictures because of the colors and the contents. I would be very interested in your postprocessing here, because the effect is that the ships are beautifully rendered to be in the foreground.

it was the first time for me in March this year that I visited Istanbul (and will stay there in October again). I took the picture from a ferry boat from Eminönü to Kadiköy, a normal touristic route I suppose, looking north to north west. I think the skyline in the background are the multistorey buildings in the area of modern Istanbul north of Golden Horn around Taksim. I think there are forum members who know Istanbul much better, maybe recognise it and they may correct this.

 

But you are right, it is not easy to recognise Istanbul in this picture. Maybe I chose a wrong titel that does not fit expectations in case some may expect Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque or typical buildings of the ancient City in the background. I am sorry for that.

I used Lightroom for post processing. I tried to make an export of the history to send it to you to see full post processing, but I did not find such a function in Lightroom (some who read this and know how to export the histroy to a plain text file or so may help). I did work much on the contrast, what is obvious and in addition on the orange, red and blue tone. I did raise the saturation of these colours and I reduced the luminance. I also changed the blue value from a lighter to a stronger blue with more red. At the end I applied sharness, overall and for the borders (? Kanten Maskierung), maybe too much, I think now after several days. The history has about 100 entries, I did a lot of try and error. I hope this answer you question. In case you have further questions do not hesitate to ask.

thank you for the explanation, I got the main message and learned a lot. Impressing to see what selective color channel work can do (I am still a beginner in digital processing).

 

Concerning the sharpness, I think the unreal touch of your image is created by the oversharp lines. Therefore up to me your postprocessing suits the image fine. If this item is changed, the whole thing might turn into another direction, resulting in a different image.

Andreas - You are correct with your description of the skyline. Your photo shows the constant flux of shipping and sea traffic well. It is difficult to get a good shot from a moving ferry.

 

Maybe it was an overcast day, because the color of the Bosphorus looks off to my eye. I travel that section very often and the water has a unique green color for such a fast moving section of waterway.

 

When are you coming to Istanbul in October?

I work much with selective colour channel at the moment. It is interesting see how the over all impression of a picture differ when you change a colour.

I see what you mean with the sharpness and I think you are right. The strong sharpness fits well to the image.

you are right it was an overcast day. As far as I remember it was a thin cloud layer (strato cumulus) with some parts where the sun came through (strato cumulus translucidus) and it was cold.

I will be in Istanbul from 27 to 31 October together with my wife. It is a tourist stay, we want to visit some places that we missed in March because we run out of time then. May I ask you for a recommendation for a place to visit that is off the normal touristic guides and that you like most?
