The most common reason why both amateur and professional photographers use DSLR cameras is due to the superior lens selection. The second most common reason was that switching to the mirrorless system is too expensive. Today they all use phones. It all started with ENG (Electronic News Gathering) which revolutionised image collection. With electronic media, speed to market/publishing is important. For most amateurs it is about speed to social media. The image quality does not have to be that great for viewing on other small digital devices. The elaborate 10 point summary above is, of course, more about cameras for capturing material for publication or printing or for books, magazines, competitions etc. There is still a market for 'serious cameras' but digital developments outside of cameras have outstripped the development of cameras which still today resemble film cameras with electronics stuffed inside them. The numbers and market shares of so-called 'mirrorless' cameras and DSLRs reflect a changing market and in a year or two from now should be completely different. Brand shares just show how well different companies are at addressing market demand. For professionals it is really about what do they need to get the pictures that they can sell or provide to an editor. One big feature in recent years has been the decline of the in-house photographer, so that many, who were formerly employed as photographers, are now self employed. They must then make a careful assessment of what they need to produce photographs that sell and what the costs are. Lens choice would be a factor there, but that will change over time. For amateurs, the situation is somewhat similar, but they have more independence as regards choices. 7 and 8 above are remarkably similar, though. Some amateurs can afford more expensive cameras than self employed professionals. This survey needs to be repeated next year and the year after etc in order to get a fuller picture.
