Advertisement Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Hi Hodc, Take a look here Satisfying Dunes at Drunen. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Hodc Posted September 19, 2007 Author Share #2 Â Posted September 19, 2007 What do you think? This is not natural lightning..... I was looking for a balance between b/w and colour. Is this a picture you believe? Or did i overdone it? Â met groet, Harry
JE Posted September 19, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted September 19, 2007 Harry, I think it looks great. It has an apocalyptic feel to it, a wind-swept brightness and foreboding perspective. The saturated colors are, IMHO, what give this photo something interesting. JE
hiphop Posted September 19, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted September 19, 2007 The soft colors and excellent composition works perfectly for me. Nice to see this shot. Pierre-Olivier

In 1944 a dutch resistance group was shot here. Because of the wind moving the dunes, their body's were never found. I walked here this morning and remembered the story, that feeling did make this composition. Â Azzo and Pierre-Oliver, Thank you both for commenting, it means a lot to me. jaapv Posted September 19, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted September 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is an impressive shot. I particularly like the way the oof foreground enhances the dramatic composition.

Hodc Posted September 20, 2007 Author Share #10  Posted September 20, 2007 Fantastic shot, did you use a polarizer? JKB  Julius, many thanks , i did not use a polarizer here. That would only added much more saturated colours, i believe.  Jaap and Bradley, i'm glad with your kind remarks, many thanks.  Harry
delander †Posted September 20, 2007 Share #11  Posted September 20, 2007 Hi Harry,  Sorry to go against the grain here but is the tree on the right really in focus? It looks as if it is slightly behind the area of focus.  I would have preferred to see a larger area of sky (and the complete tree), less OOF foreground.  Finally not that comfortable with the desaturation. Looks very contrived to me, better in B&W I feel.  But this is just my view.  Jeff
Hodc Posted September 20, 2007 Author Share #12  Posted September 20, 2007 Hi Harry, Sorry to go against the grain here but is the tree on the right really in focus? Looks very contrived to me, better in B&W I feel.  But this is just my view.  Jeff Jeff, thank you for commenting. Please feel free to react. I'm glad you did. You are right, the tree is out of focus, as i intented. The sharpness is in the front and ends towards the tree. That gives a strange feel of distance between the foreground and the second tree. Because of the difference in hight, and me lying in the sand, it is as if you can't get into it. ... It may be disturbing and that was for me intentional. Please keep in mind the history of the execution on which i based this picture.  The dictionary says "contrived" means mechanical. Sorry for my english. I give you that one. I don't know any natural(non-digital??!??!??) way of obtaining this 'duo-effect'. You may dislike it. And for my own archive i did made some other pictures as you mentioned.  thanks Jeff met groet, Harry
hiphop Posted September 20, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted September 20, 2007 I do not agree at all with what was said by Jeff. Of course everybody has his own opinion and has to express frankly his feeling. At first see this shot was looking a bit strange but the more you look at it the more you like it, I believe. When I red the story about this beach, I started to understand or feel even better what you have tried to express (with success) in this shot. At some point I would even imagine that this shot was taken from (inside) the sand if you see what I mean.... Strange when you know what happened there. IMHO the focus add something to the shot and the color could not be better. Pierre-Olivier
Hodc Posted September 21, 2007 Author Share #14 Â Posted September 21, 2007 Pierre-Olivier, Thanks again for your kind comment. I'm glad you think the picture 'succeded'. Its oke for me that we(people in general) differ. For me the "taking of this picture' was not an conscious act all the way. I knew the story and felt the need to compose it somehow. I do think and see we all compose in different ways, happily. Â met groet, Harry
delander †Posted September 21, 2007 Share #15  Posted September 21, 2007 Hi Harry,  'contrived' means:  planned so carefully as to seem unnatural, artificial, forced. (From the the Concise Oxford Dictionary). I think 'forced' is what I was really trying to say.  However I understand your intent and I am sorry for my own sake maybe, that I don't 'get it'.  But then I don't get lots of the 'Leica' B&W photos that are very dark and generally OOF.    Best,  Jeff

'Forced' i do grasp that verb. For me it was a study in what can i tell in one picture and what atmosphere comes accross. Which photografic and postprocess-tools do i have to use for that cause. The picture in its own sake does not tell the hole story. Its just mine impression of how i see these Dunes with that story in my mind. I guess!! A lot happens on a unconsious level. Try and error.  greetings Jeff,  I really like the way people reacted differently, many thanks for that. Harry
delander †Posted September 21, 2007 Share #17  Posted September 21, 2007 Hi Harry,  Is this the Drunense duinen south-west of Den Bosch?  If so I have walked there myself, many years ago, because during the years 77-79 we lived and worked in Den Bosch.  Best,  Jeff
