Thank you for all for your advice.

HOWEVER, trying again last night I cannot duplicate the results described above, and so far my best case tests are to shoot, guess at an adjustment, shoot again, adjust some more, and so on. At abourt 4 meters what I arrived at was setting the Metz 3000 to A for F/4, setting the lens aperture to F/16, and moving the SCA under/over expose switch all the way to underexpose.

Any other thoughts? If not I guess I'll have to experiment in the field just before doing any real night shooting.

You might not have the right SCA adapter or flash. Which flash and which adapter are you using. I think you need the SCA 3502 MK3 or later.

Stuart,

Where will you be in Africa. After being there I really don't see need for night shots. I stayed at the Hilton Salt Lick Lodge and they ring a bell in your room when animals are at the natural salt lick and I was unimpressed with the results of picture taken there with flash (far from natural) and if you used their lighting it was kind of greenish and far from sharp.

I would think that you could work you tail off during the day taking great pictures of the great animals, just take plenty of SD cards or have a good sized hard hard drive on your laptop. The idea of a lap top seems like it might be kind of cumbersome since we stayed somewhere different every night we were in the bush and had to carry everything with us as we went. The Amboseli Game Lodge was great as it was near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

I am new to this list, but just in case, I offer this suggestion, please take at least a 400mm lens with you, you will need it. I used my 400 and my 180 all the time, but used the 400 more often than any thing else. Of course, when I was there I had an entire camera case filled with film and people on my vehicle and when we stopped got pissed at me when I would not sell any of my film. Have you found out if any of the 4 gig SD cards will work with your DMR?

Tom -

Thank you. Years ago we visited Zimbabwe, Tanzania & Kenya and have quite a number of pre-Leica photos from there (and therefore can't post them here - You can see them on our site). And I agree re" a very long lens. At that time I kept s 28-200 on one body, and a 500 mirror on another.

This trip is to Namibia and Botswana, and we're looking forward to meeting a Leica Forum member while there.

I have no idea if the 4GB will work. I'll travel with 2-2 GB cards, 8-512 MB cards, and a 40GB portable drive.
