New Leica DSLR System?

A few more points about the MF market.

The price for Leica's primes are absurd in the 35mm market but $3,000 a pop is normal in the MF market. The bar for AF performance is lower for MF systems then it is for the 35mm systems used by sports shooters and PJ's. Leica's R ergonomics and electronics are more like MF cameras then the electronic wunder-gizmo's from CaNikon.

For a company looking to maintain production of expensive high quality optics in Euroland the MF market might have some appeal. Leica certainly has the quality credentials and a Leica DSLR 40 MP full frame camera at Photokina would get huge press and attention. Leica has no chance with the R of competing with CaNikon in the pro sports/photojournalist market so where can they be competitive? The high-end studio shooter who thinks it's normal to drop 30 or 40 K on a camera, digital back and one lens - looking for the ultimate in image quality - not wanting to many electronic gizmos seems about right for Leica's expensive tiny production facilities and price is no object lens designs. Leica's range of wide angles would make any MF shooter drool.

Leica is the pioneer of 35mm not MF cameras!

It was no sense on that solution in my point of view.

I will prefer to see one R digital in the area of 35mm like the olds R´s.

Leica can compete whit Canon or Nikon they prove it whit M8 why put the head in the sand?

Peter,

NO, I am not camparing Canon's G9 to any offerings here.

What I am stating it's a Gorgeous little camera, well made, and cheaper then any Leica offerings

As a 35 year Leica veteran, I still think Leica has the edge in the 35mm format.

Others.

My statments on this forum are my own, I can only go on what I get told.

As we are all Leica devotee's, I like to share the information to you.

I sincerly hope that the price tag and 40 megs for the R10 are nonsence

It's not in my nature to spread false rumours, after all it's in no benifit to me.

My love of Leica Cameras over the years is only to wish success for the Leica R10.

And hopefully it's at a price range that most can buy.

TIME WILL TELL.

Ken.

There's no need to feel sorry ... Ken. It's pretty common that a rumor could get a totally different twist after passing 2 or 3 persons. In many cases, even the company's own employees wouldn't know precisely what's down in the pipe and I've seen this way too often ... just to give you an example, I found the most accurate rumors on a Nikon usually come from a person who works for Canon. LOL

I could not agree MORE !!!!!

Price tags for Leica R lenses are too high, you easily can get a MF lens for that!

The market niche for Leica in the DSLR segment is not as competitor to Nikon and Canon, bt a leel above!

The 40MP is not believable. While strictly speaking possible, I don't think that even Leica's lenses would hold up to such a sensor. 20MP is much more believable. I cannot imagine that Kodak and Leica could jump above medium format in resolution. It will take them a while to catch up with Canon, who is ahead of everyone in sensor design (if not in look).

Hi Carsten,

40MP is not so far fetched. On another thread I proposed that two M8 sensors joined along the long side would yield a 4:3, 36 X 27mm sensor which is 4 X 4/3rds sensors. The current 10MP 4/3rds sensor has 4.7µm pixels giving max resolution of 106 lp/mm and with the filters on the sensor (even sans AA) would drop from that to say, 80 lp/mm. Since that represents the finest detail, I'd venture to say that the primes would be OK. Average detail resolution in pictures is more like half the fine detail resolution, so zooms should fair well, too.

It would be fun to find out if I am right:)

Bob
