AFAIK, it was so that they could make the housing more robust... i.e. metal instead of plastic.

Indeed, I am also looking forward to this feature.

For the moment, I use Geotag Photos Pro on my iPhone, like I have been doing for the past few years.  

The software is very straightforward and the gpx data can be imported directly into Lightroom. It does not drain my phone's battery excessively.

I'm also waiting for bluetooth and the auto-geotagging function via the Leica app... it was one of several arguments for buying the M11 (instead of a black painted M10-R).

Until then, I'll use the "myTracks" app. Great support from the developer, compatible with macOS, iOS, watchOS. Tracking also works independently with the watchOS app, everything is synchronised via iCloud...
