Thanks,

I have no problem with mail order within US, such as shipping from New York (B&H ) to California. I saw your order are shipping within Europe (Germany to France?).

Still wondering what if shipping between US and Europe or Asia.

IMO I would think shipments would be subjected to higher powered X-rays and more scrutiny than taking through normal security.

@Einst_Stein I thought this answered that issue. 🤔

Next time I travel overseas I just need to make sure to research where I can buy film retail when I land. I only worry about the CRT scanners when flying out of the US. The countries I travelled out of in Asia just prior to the pandemic didn’t have the new scanners.

I travelled to France last November. What I did is buy the film online (fotoimpex) and get it delivered there before. At the end of the trip, I shipped the film to a lab in Spain (Malvarrosa)for development. This included some delta 3200. Everything was 100% fine…

I also get film delivered to Singapore without any issue so far. Including delta3200 from B&H .

Hope this helps!

A little off topic but for your info I often go on humanitarian medical missions and I have three Domke bags to put all my rolls of film inside these bags ,  films travel with me in the cabin and the security officers at the X Ray scanner or CT Scanner are informed that they are films because I show them and that's how I don't have any problem for years with my undeveloped films (because I develop when I get home).

I have used metal box. I got more troubles. I had to open it and got badly treated.

Anything protection blocks X-ray would be equally bad.

Hi Einst , I have been going on humanitarian missions for years as practician in all the countries of Asia and Africa I have never had any problems 😀

I can understand that. The troubles are more likely on US side.
Also, my trips were not as respectable as yours.

Henry, just to make sure I understand. These are "lead" bags and they go through the CT scanner, and you don't have fogging issues?

I personally don't have problems with regular X-rays. I regularly count 6+ passes of my hand luggage without fogging of ISO 400 film (I don't use protective wrapping), but I am not sure my film ever went trough a CT scanner.

A member of the largeformatforum demonstrated fogging of large format film after a single pass through a CT scanner (without protective wrapping).

The rumour used to say that lead bags would just result in the operator increasing the radiation and thereby nullify the protective effect of the bag, but I have now heard reports that X-ray scanner operators don't/can't change the radiation but rather filtration, thus that would support use of these bags.

Hi Nitro , my experience is mostly for Asia as I said in my previous post I have no problem when I put on my "undeveloped" films or "new" films when I go into the cabin when I show them to the security guards before going through the gate 😀

I have also find this link ( note that it does not use the anti X Ray Domke bag for the test)

Thanks Henry.

My very recent experiment with 400 iso film (HP5+) going through Copenhagen(DK), Charles de Gaulle(FR), Haneda(JP), Komatsu(JP) and Narita(JP), twice without protection, showed no effect regardless of whether it was in the hand luggage or in the checked luggage.

I have no knowledge of whether any passes went through CT scanners or not, but I was surprised that even the film in the checked luggage showed no effect of the scans in these modern airports.

best

Niels

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought one of those Domke bags (Size M). Holds 15 35mm rolls without plastic canisters, maybe 12-13 with and even less with the cardbord box.

Made in USA, a refreshing change!

If you buy from EU, be aware that Amazon.de is quite a bit cheaper than Fotoimpex at the time of writing this post.

Well made and heavy bag. Weights around 270gr.

I hope it will give me a little peace of mind during my travels with film.
