I’ve been using an M 35mm summicron setting  for my CL 40mm summicron but will presumably be better just setting 40mm focal length rather than setting what I think is ‘closest’ M lens?

Yes because the 35mm adds unneeded lens and vinyetting corrections. If you set it to the 40mm focal length it just activates the stabilizer. If you like those corrections feel free to continue to use them.

well I should say it depends.

are you using the Leica original adapter? in that case you should get some correction in the image. Some lenses have more correction then others, I have see a drastic improvement with the 21mm SEM, the same correction would be hard to accede in post. Other lenses have minimal correction, since there is no electronic information on the f-stop use the vignetting correction has to work for f1.4 and f16 the vignetting correction is mild.

If you are using a 3rd party adapter the lens corrections are not applied, just activation of ibis and exif data.

In the new firmware an option has been added to select a focal length , no lens correction will be added with any adapter.
