yeahyoung Posted September 2, 2022 Share #1 Posted September 2, 2022 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) See the pic below... My guess is that this is a replacement top plate without s/n and then engraved during replacement? The engraving does look like it was done in in the factory though. And judged by the fact that the "M4" is in a font larger than the "002", I think this engraving was done in the Canadian factory. Any thoughts? Much appreciated. Welcome, dear visitor! yeahyoung Posted September 2, 2022 Author Share #2 Posted September 2, 2022 (edited) A bit more about this camera: The flash outlet has the bold lighting engraving, which I think is a features of the early M4? yeahyoung Posted September 2, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted September 2, 2022 (edited) Okay I have done a bit more research and I am pretty sure this is after-market engraving on a top plate without serial number. The "M4" is in a different front than the factory M4s, so are the "0"s in "002". For some reason the shop did this choose to engrave "002". luigi bertolotti Posted September 4, 2022 Share #4 Posted September 4, 2022 You have reached, in my opinion, the right conclusion : "4" and "0" are wrong... a re-engraved spare top.

I did a bit more research, and found that in the 60s, Leica did occasionally use this font in their engravings. See the pic taken from Lager's Leica: An Illustrated History Vol. 1. Notice the 4 and 0 used, and this camera is made in 1962. On the other hand, there is no evidence that this particular font has been used on an M camera, and this font seems to be a generic one. I am not saying that this proves anything, just suggesting that we should not rule out factory engraving on the basis of the font alone? Welcome, dear visitor!
