Got this info from Ken Rockwell’s site probably written when the M9  was released  unfortunately the SD cards mention are no longer available.  SD cards recommended/tested (link above)

Storage

SD and SDHC cards up to 32GB. Much slower downloads than the current hot CF cards.

Leica specifically recommends the  SanDisk Ultra II 4GB, SanDisk Ultra II 16GB and SanDisk Ultra II 2GB cards.

CF card.. Is that compatible with a camera that takes SD cards?

Errr-no. I think it is a statement about comparative speed. For best performance in the M9 you want a 'slow' card of low capacity, 16gb/ 48mb/sec  if you can find them.

Top quality card of course, like genuine SanDisk.

No sorry I didn’t notice the CF card reference. This was written in 2009 ish when the M9 was launched. CF cards were a big thing then, not so much now.

The M9 uses SD format cards and support up to 32GB SDHC cards by the looks of it.

As @pedaes says get a good quality one, be careful of fake ones too. I usually use Lexar cards, but that’s my preference after there were a lot of fake Sandisk cards floating around.

The above advice is correct. Note that the larger and faster capacity cards are generally SDXC - which is a more recent standard not supported by older devices like the M9. Same physical size - different internal operation. With the M9 circuitry a faster card doesn't matter, and with its file size 16 GB is huge!

The M9 is really slow at handling memory cards, so the speed of the card is not the problem. And the M9 is known to work well only with certain cards.

Back in 2012 when I purchased my M9 I started using 8GB SanDisk Ultra SDHC cards, which were a common size then. They work really well. Later I tried the 16GB version but found the 8GB to be faster. Unfortunately I don't think these particular cards are manufactured anymore, but it may be worth trying similar cards of different, also smaller sizes. Even 8GB cards can hold quite a number of M9 images.
