grahamc Posted August 23, 2022 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2022 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica on launch apparently called this lens the “long focus dwarf”. We call it the “fat” Even in this politically correct age I’m willing to overlook these faux pas and give it a try 😁 I’m looking for a 90mm to pair up with early (v1 - v3) 35mm summicrons and the 1969 50:2 v3 Since the production period mid 60s-mid 70s overlap with the lenses I’ve mentioned, could the mandler designed, Canadian-built fatty be the answer ? Heavier than I’d like but I can’t seem to find the perfect match in this FL - I tried Tele-elmarit thin and love the size/weight but it’s not a close enough rendering match to complete this set, IMHO. To put this into context I have the 1979 onward 35:2 v4, 50:2 v4 & 90:2 v3 and to my eye the colours & contrast match up exactly across this 3 lens set. Trying to achieve something similar with an earlier generation set . Cheers ! 😁 Edited August 23, 2022 by grahamc
Advertisement Posted August 23, 2022 Posted August 23, 2022 Hi grahamc, Take a look here I’m going to try the 90mm Tele-Elmarit “fat”. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ianman Posted August 23, 2022 Share #2 Posted August 23, 2022 I have the fat. And I like it,. For me it’s the perfect companion for my Summaron-M. My favourite FLs and both easily pocketable. Good combo for an afternoon walk in the woods or on the moor.

Yes pocketable is on the check list and think the fat is “just about”.
Kwesi Posted August 24, 2022 Share #4 Posted August 24, 2022 Graham, Get one. I owned the thin during my film days then moved to the Elmarit-M for digital starting with the M9. Something about those two always left me wanting for more something. Then I got the "fat" and now I feel like I can finally relax and enjoy the 90. Here it is on the M11 from this past weekend. I think it may be too heavy for the brief but can imagine it's great - I'll put it on the list to try down the track, I love my 90:2 v3 . EDIT: I just realised I didn't mention I want something light (ish) in the original post, sorry Edited August 24, 2022 by grahamc
genji Posted August 24, 2022 Share #8 Posted August 24, 2022 Perhaps we should refer to the Fat Elmarit as “the 90mm Elmarit living in a larger body.” In any case I recently acquired one to team up with a Summaron 35/2.8 and a Summicron 50 Rigid. I’m very happy with the trio.

derleicaman Posted August 24, 2022 Share #10 Posted August 24, 2022 It’s the Eric Cartman of Leica 90’s. As Cartman says, “it’s got big bones”!

That being said there is the Voigtlander 90mm F2.8 APO-Skopar VM. Have you given this one a thought?

Fred Miranda himself tried three copies, all of which front-focused. My copy front-focused, as did that of another FM member. One owner was happy with his, attributing any minor focusing inaccuracies as acceptable for a 90mm rangefinder lens. An admittedly small sample but five out of six copies exhibited the same fault. TomB_tx Posted August 24, 2022 Share #14 Posted August 24, 2022 The "fat" TE 90 was the first Leica lens I bought in 1968 to go with my M4. I had used a friend's TE on an M2 for sports work, and loved the combination. When the local shop got in another TE I couldn't resist the combination. After a few years something shifted inside (perhaps due to a knock), and I gradually noticed no shots I took with it were keepers - low contrast and not sharp, So it sat in a drawer for decades. Eventually I sent it to Gus Lazzari who said the rear optical group was out of position. Since I got it back it's been outstanding again. I also have a few other 90s, but this is the equal of any. 1

Your post reminded me that I bought a Fat TE 90 in 1972 to go with my first Leica, an M2. That lens and camera are long gone but it’s nice to have one again.

That’s great to know. The production era definitely matches up with the lenses I’m hoping to pair with so I have quite high hopes now that I’ll like this I also have 0.85 viewfinder so could be nice Edited August 24, 2022 by grahamc
grahamc Posted August 24, 2022 Author Share #17 Posted August 24, 2022 (edited) Are the hoods that are commonly seen with this lens (12575?) reversible for storage, like the hood on the TE thin ? Thanks Edited August 24, 2022 by grahamc
