D. Schmid Posted August 18, 2022 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a M9-P, and it came together with a Tele-Elmarit-M 1:2.8/90. The serial number on the aperture ring is 3430091. I would like to have more information on this lens like the production year etc., so I looked it up on https://reddotcamera.net/leica/serial-number-tool/ and on https://reddotcamera.net/leica-lenses/serial-number/. Both databases say it's a Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 - but it isn't! How can this be? Was the same serial number given to different lenses? How can I find out more about my Tele-Elmarit-M? Michael Geschlecht Posted August 19, 2022 Share #3 Posted August 19, 2022 Hello D.Schmid, Welcome to the Forum. Sometimes, a Leitz/Leica lens, body, etc. is numbered with a number that puts it in a group with something different than what it is. If you go to the top of this page & "click" the WIKI there, in English. And then go to "M" lenses & look at the second group of Tele-Elmarit 90mm f2.8 lenses. And then look for the serial number group of your lens: You will see that listing includes another 28mm lens. Not an every day occurrence. But it happens. Best Regards, Michael

I would like to have more information on this lens like the production year etc. Yours was made in approximately 1987 (Leica S/Ns are also not perfectly precise as to year, since they are pre-assigned in batches, which may spill over into later production years). Made overall between 1974 and 1989, at Leitz Canada and then Leica Germany (Solms) - yours is probably German-made, but check its engravings to be sure. A very compact 90mm f/2.8, that performs quite well, but has a notable tendency for flare in back-lighting. My favorite Leica 90mm lens - in the right light - because of its tiny size. You can find out a bit more here: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/90mm_f/2.8_Tele-Elmarit-M and here (page 65 and 68) http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/images/3/3a/Puts-2002-M-lenses.pdf
