My M8 works fine with USB, I can access the pictures on the SD card via USB. (Very slow transfer thou, so a modern SD card reader is much better)

Not sure it has an internal memory, are you sure you are not seeing the SD card content?

There is also a Leica program for setting exposure and trigger the M8 via USB, has been useful as a remote trigger with camera on tripod.

The camera is old but not useless…

Hardly a useless camera if you have to take out the SD card. I really like my M8 though it is a little short on MP is my only complaint. A comment you made raises a question, if you can use USB to trigger the camera, does it bring the image to the computer after the shutter is triggered? What is the program being used and is it still available?  Should I continue with my cable release? Thanks

When ever I connect my M8 to my Windows 11 PC via the OEM USB cable I only see the internal storage, but not the SD card.  Is this normal or is there a problem?  Any clarity on this subject is appreciated.

I tested now.

This is win 10, camera connected and on (USB symbol on rear screen)

pictures is in DCIM folder on SD-Card, transfer of one DNG take 4 seconds.

Now the fun part… 🙂

I tested to install Leica Capture dated from 2006…

Can be installed on Win10, can trigger camera, can set ISO etc…

BUT … can not save the image on SD card, the led blinks, but nothing on the SD.

AND … now the above described procedure for image acces is broken… only the RamDisk is shown.

And the small matter of ”ThumNail error 2”…

But it has a very nice picture of a M8

And now my camera is as the original topic, no SD access over USB.

Not even after in camera formatting of the SD card.

But normal access with another SD card.

So something happened with my first SD when trying out Leica Capture.

not even quick format on the computer + format in camera helps

Beeing a software and electronics engineer helps sometime, but not today… 🙂

OK, for what it is worth 2022:

I have an old laptop with XP Professional, I tested Leica Digital Capture 1.0

Everything works as expected, camera exposure can be set, camera can be triggered and images are downloaded per capture. Takes 3 seconds per 10Mbyte dng, and camera is locked while dowloading.

The zipped application is 2.1 Mbyte, send me a message and I can email it.  Or if you trust the internet, google it.

To summarize my findings:

I have now also manged to NOT being able to access the SD-card via USB, most cards that i have does not work, one or two old cards I had worked at first, but after in camera format they also stopped being accessible. So still no clarity, but external card reader always work.

(dmesg on Linux tell me that the camera connects but is not recognized as a mass storage device)
