I've put a test roll through my IIIa, and in the brighter exposures can see what looks like a brighter patch just inside the frame of the picture.

The brighter area starts on one side, and looks like it tails off towards the other end of the frame.

Just realised that on the original negative, the area in question would be darker, not lighter.

Hopefully attached inverted, and non-inverted scans below.  They are oriented so you are looking at the emulsion side as it faces towards the back of the lens.

The picture was taken at f4 1/60

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks.

To me, that looks like flare from a bright area just outside the picture (to the left, in your posted images - maybe a window just outside of the frame?) bouncing off the inside of the camera in front of and around the shutter opening.

Keep in mind that the film sits in the back of a "shadow box" several mms deep behind the shutter opening - the edges of the picture area are shaded from such flare by the depth of the "box", and thus are not struck by the flare (and are darker).

Still happens even with today's digital Ms from time to time - both the internal camera flare, and the darker edge areas that are protected from the flare.
