Would you do it...M2?

A while back I talked about getting a second body to accompany my M8.

This was a cheap M2. I had an M6 before the M8, but traded it in when I bought the M8.

However great the M8, there will be places I don't care to take it. I love film, I develop my own B&W and Slides + I have a B&W enlarger, and a scanner left over from my film days with the M6.

I can get the M2 for as little as 260euros. It's been around the world ten times I think, but the shutter sounded good, the viewfinder is very bright! I was amazed. The vulkanite rubber, is in a bit of a bad shape. It has some marks here and there, but as a whole, it's seems to be working just fine, apart from the shabby exterior.

Now, the price is this low, because the previous owner left it in the sun, and it got a hole in the shutter curtain. This has been fixed, but the seller (Leica dealer in Helsinki) was not the one to fix it, neither is he sure of who did the fix, and therefore he's selling it as is.

A fully working a bit shabby looking M2, with good times, curtain fixed and not leaking with a bright and clear finder. Would you go for it at 260e?

Then you'll be ok...

Here's the source to replace your vulcanite.

CameraLeather.com Custom camera leather and leatherette

But I would suggest that you have it done by a pro.

I don't think you want to keep the original paint...

Have it hammer-toned. :)

It wouldn't be so expensive and you'll be proud each time you carry your costum M2.

Best Regards

Martin,

I didn't have my M3 costumed.

Now here's the bummer...

I only thought of that a month after I paid premium on a mint 1959 M3 and seeing someone at a theme park with a costum gray hammer-toned M2 wrapped in alligator skin.

Absolutely in looks better than an original costum Leica, designed at Solms.

All you need is a mechanically functional or fixable ugly M2 with "no ding or deep scartches". Brassing is fine...

As far as painting, all they need to paint is the Top and bottom plate.

Your Independent Leica Repair Technician know where to send it for painting.

How about the little chrome parts??? To my taste I love the blueish "German Chrome".

Andreas,

Is that gonna be Viper or Alligator... :)

Best,

-Ron

No!

Junk will always be junk.

As regards all the other Replies, it is very easy to spend someone else's money.-Dick

Dick,

I don't think it's a good idea to costum your Fuji quicksnap dispossable

with fine leather and premium paint.

Just my opinion but it's a take it or leave it... ;)

No it's not cost effective since you have to do all the hassel each time you develop a film.

Sorry...

Here's my piece of junk, bought from a seller on e bay. Took a chance, but don't regret it. It needed a CLA as the shutter was faulty but now its spot on.

Junk? No Leica M2 could ever be considered Junk no matter how 'used' it was. Everything is reparable on it anyway. I like the idea of a battered example - if only it could tell its stories.

I have personally seen the low cost and the brand name of an item cause an individual to become so wrapped up that the ability to see is clouded. Whether it's a Leica M2, Ferrari Dino, Rolex Daytona or Purdey Damascus shotgun, the cost of repairing and refurbishing is much more than the cost of the item purchased in Mint condition.

Hopefully the M2 referenced will function and continue to function correctly and your costs will be reasonable. But for me, I pay for condition and function and have found that the costs are much less and the aggravation less also.

Of course the old adage applies here, "One mans gold is another man's junk'! -Dick
