John in Japan Posted September 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got my camera back from Leica. It showed up with the new firmware as well. Within about 5 seconds when I go into Setup and hit the scroll wheel the screen flashes on and off a million times real fast, which of course it was doing before. It just happens when it wants and can't seem to be repeated on purpose. Then I'm shooting and again, every once in a great while I get a "picture" in the LCD similar to a TV that's on no station. Just static. Fortunately it did take the photo although in the past it has not. All this being said I LOVE the look of the photos. The images are remarkable, especially portraits in black and white. In fact no other digital does black and white like this in my opinion. I wish I could describe what I like about the M8 image quality but I can't articulate it. But, I have to ask myself if these bugs are worthy of a camera that costs almost $5000 with no lens and I have to ask myself if I'd ever remotely consider buying another one in the future. I'm keeping this camera. I think it's a classic and I think it will be a classic still in 25 years. But come on. Leica means superior craftsmanship and an LCD that flashes at me like a Disco lighting system is not superior craftsmanship. John
Advertisement Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Hi John in Japan, Take a look here Frustrated with M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest GuyMancusoPhoto Posted September 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2007 John it's a known bug and we are just waiting for a firmware fix . The current firmware is 1.107 and hopefully the next go round some of the small bugs will be fixed. The camera is fine but just annoying sometimes when it does that and usually it happens after a firmware upgrade than the fast scroll seems to go away for awhile. There still working on firmware stuff. I would expect something pretty soon here. Even though i am a beta tester for them i don't get to see all the updates all the time. My guess though we will see this fixed pretty soon though. It's been on the table for awhile
John in Japan Posted September 13, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted September 13, 2007 Thanks.....I knew about the flashing screen but I don't see anyone else complaining about the static looking screen. I have missed / lost shots in the past because of it. I do hope you're right. The absolute sharpest images I have ever taken in my life have been taken with this camera and a Summicron 50mm lens. I love the camera, but it does frustrate me. I just bought a $150 pocket cam that doesn't do this. John
Guest GuyMancusoPhoto Posted September 13, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 13, 2007 John the static could be a bad card. Try a different one
cbretteville Posted September 13, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 13, 2007 John, The 'static' is probably what we're referring to as 'venetian blinds' in other threads. Black and white or black and red horizontal stripes appear rather than the image just after a capture. It is annoying as is the cursor flying in the menu. As Guy mentioned we hope they'll fix it. None the less I've gotten used to them by now and don't really think about these annoyances as problems any more. - C
Guest GuyMancusoPhoto Posted September 13, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2007 I'm sorry i read the static wrong , yes that is the venetin blind effect and again a well known bug. In color it comes up red and black
John in Japan Posted September 13, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted September 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The venetian blinds sounds exactly like what I'm getting. I'm going to take the camera out this afternoon and run it through it's paces and see what happens. Like I said, I'm more than pleased with the quality of the images. It's a fine camera but it has a personality. John
carstenw Posted September 13, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 13, 2007 Yes, it is temperamental. I got the venetian blinds a few times this past week, as well as some crazy scrolling antics and wrong button presses, but there isn't another camera on the market right now I would rather own. Guest GuyMancusoPhoto Posted September 13, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 13, 2007 John it does have personality and it is interesting and i did report this on new firmware installs it happens more often than it settles down for some strange reason. i have not seen the blinds effect in quite some time. But the two issues you mention are well known , go out shoot and enjoy it. It's too much fun to worry about the little stuff

I have had absolutely no trouble of any kind with my M8 and have taken thousands of amateur pictures with it, and am amazed at the image quality. Kent10D Posted September 14, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 14, 2007 Yes, it is temperamental. John it does have personality ... You guys are masters of euphemism! My wife has a personality, and she's temperamental, and I can't get rid of her either! So I guess that means I love my M8 as much as I love my wife! Or vice-versa? Seriously. Wouldn't part with either for the world.

It's a fine camera but it has a personality. John My M8 showed occationally 'Venevian Blinds' from the first day on. I shoot both RAW and 'fine' jpg. Then the M8 works hard & slow. I shoot the same combination on my Canon 1Ds II and that camera show signs of 'overwork' in this mode too; the last picture does not show up on the lcd etc. May be the M8 (- and the 1Ds II) works better only shooting RAW? 'Venecian Blinds'; don't worry about it. It happens to most of us and it does not seem to cause any harm. - Most other digital cameras has similar - or other, bugs. I have been shooting "RAW only" since Day 1 and have experienced no problems whatsoever. Tried a few franes shooting RAW + JPEG last week, immediately noticed how much longer it takes to write and also noticed the "venetian blinds" for the first time.
