Hi all,

as a matter of curiosity, is it possible (=does it take pictures?) to mount other system lenses on an S camera (type 7 onwards) with an L to other adapters?

For example, on SL systems you can practically use anything you like, provided there is an L mount adapter. Since L is the same mount, could one use on the S cameras?

I understand vignetting and coverage of the sensor. My question is about functionality, i.e. would the camera switch on and allow to record images / video or not?

I have seen some really cool images done with the fuji plus R and canon lenses. Would be interesting to test with the S.

G.

As said above, it will not take anything on the L mount, but it will take anything that requires a flange focal distance of larger than about 55mm. The flange focal distance is 53mm, plus about 2mm for an adapter plate...to get an idea of what is possible, you can look at this list, and have a look at whatever comes after the Leica S in the list...it is basically all medium format, with small exceptions here and there (some Leica R telephotos can be converted, but it is not as simple as an adapter).

To the best of my knowledge, with appropriate adapters, you can mount Contax 645, Hasselblad H, Hasselblad V, Pentax 67, and some Mamiya 645 lenses on the S and maintain full functionality - AF where present, and aperture control, although possibly stopped down metering. Someone has a Pentax 645 adapter, but it is not widely available. I have used the Contax, Hassy, and Pentax 67 adapters and lenses and can vouch for them.

I have a couple of these. They’re well worth the effort to obtain as the Pentax 645 A 75mm is tiny but performs surprisingly well (because the S doesn’t use the full image circle and just uses the ‘sweet spot’ of the lens). I also use the Pentax 645 33-55mm as it’s lightweight and covers quite a handy range. It’s not on par with the 75mm but in a pinch it works pretty well.

I’ve spoken about the adapter in previous threads so you can check those out.

I have some helicoid focusing adapters with an S body fitting so I’m going to try and fix some random manual focus lenses on them and see if any focus to infinity (the helicoids have quite a long focusing range). I’m thinking of trying out some 35mm full frame lenses (knowing that they won’t cover the whole S sensor). Worth a shot!

You may get decent macro focus, but I think it will be VERY hard to get anything near infinity on a FF lens. The flange distance on the S is way too big. But I look forward to the results!
