Why an Old Camera?

Wilfredo:

You post reminds me of people equating good cameras with good photos.

Any time somebody mentions that my pictures are so good that I must have a good camera, I say " Do you tell a cook he must have good pots because his food is so good? "

Wow, sounds like most of us have had similar experiences. I really do like the classic look of the M8, and the fact it remains an unobtrusive camera. There's a part of me that has always liked being different, but it also amazes me that people think new technology has to look a certain way, just like the security people in airports, scary.

Rob,

I'll have to remember your line about pots and pans :-)

Cheers,

Wilfredo

We had one of my wife's host families and their foreign exchange student over yesterday, and both my black M8 and Chrome M6TTL were sitting on the Coffee table. They asked how old were my classic cameras. They were shocked that the M6TTL was only 7 years old and the M8 was only 8 months old. Looking at them right now, I really like the look of the chrome M6TTL over the look of the black M8. The Chrome M6TTL really looks great with the Titanium 35 Summilux on it.

Gene, do you have a picture of the titanium/chrome look? That is something I have wondered about but haven't looked at yet. Black/black, chrome/chrome, black/chrome, chrome/black, yes, but not titanium. If anyone has black paint lenses or cameras, I would also love to see pictures of those in unusual combinations, or even just black paint/black paint.

I have an idea for a visual update of my M8, but won't reveal it yet. I will post a picture when I am done :)

Slightly off-topic:

I went to see Lou Reed play in Berlin a few months ago. I took my M8 with 35mm Lux. I wasn't going to shoot, but leaving it in the car seemed like a bad idea - there isn't much theft, but I was worried my parking job was going to lead to a towed car, and I didn't want the camera flying around in the trunk.

Anyway, I brought the camera, but there was a big "No Photos" sign.

The security guy stops me, and checks out my camera. "Is this an SLR?"...

"No, it's a Rangefinder."

"But it's not an SLR, right?" he asks me again.

"Nope."

"Good, 'cause we don't allow good cameras in during the show."

10 minutes later the head of security finds me - he's been working this venue for 15 years. He is a HUGE man, with lots of tatoos and rings, and wears a suit the way other people wear under-shirts... very snug. Btw, in spite of his appearance, or because of it, he has impeccable manners and is really friendly. He looks at me, laughs, and points. "Nice M8, I got one, too - and I just bought a Noctilux. Don't use it in here, or that one becomes part of my collection. Have a nice show."

LOL, he's probably over at the German forums...

Interestingly, if I recall correctly, Lou Reed also has an M8.

Cheers,

I just rolled off my chair laughing. Thanks for sharing--even if OT. --Will

Carsten, I will have to see if I have one. If not I'll take one and post it. The combo is really nice. The titanium color really works good against the Chrome M6TTL. I would like to have the Leica script logo added to both my M6TTL and the M8 on the top. I'm going to Germany next year. I may call ahead and see if they can make up one for each ahead of time and have them switch top plates while I tour the factory, assuming they are still doing the tours. ;-)
