Richard K Posted April 15, 2022 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Those of you that shoot both, when you go out do you look for both or have a dedicated colour or B&W day? Or better yet, take just the Q2 Monochrom or Q2? (assuming you have both, I don’t)
Advertisement Posted April 15, 2022 Posted April 15, 2022 Hi Richard K, Take a look here Shoot both colour and B&W?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
seesweat Posted April 15, 2022 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2022 Alas, I don't have both either. If I think I'll want B&W (which is usually the case), I shoot DNG + M-JPG and BW nat. That way I see B&W in the finder. DNG is always color - B&W is a post-processing choice unless you are only shooting JPG. Only downside is the extra file, but I'm a dilegent deleter.
robsonj Posted April 15, 2022 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2022 When I owned a Q2m I felt that you should just take the monochrom, and look for BW 100%, but alas I would always notice a shot that would only work in color. Sold the Q2m 😀
Richard K Posted April 15, 2022 Author Share #4 Posted April 15, 2022 Yeah, that keeps happening to me too. I think I’ll bring my Q2M AND my Sony when I go to out to shoot B&W just in case a good colour opportunity presents…but the primary focus (hah!) will be B&W. Or vice versa. IOW, get a bigger case and take both but go out with a mindset for one that day but prepared for the serendipitous other.
DonovanMediaCenter Posted April 15, 2022 Share #5 Posted April 15, 2022 I set up for a monochrome jpeg (I chickened out on the Q2M). So I’m looking for interesting shapes and shadows first. Some images you know are gonna pop (flowers and such).
robsonj Posted April 15, 2022 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2022 I find the Sony A7rIV and also the M10r, produce some really good black and white conversions, so as much as I want a Q2m again, I've been there and trying not to go back. The Q2 produces some wonderful SooC colours
luetz Posted April 16, 2022 Share #7 Posted April 16, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Q2 and shoot both BW and colour. I only save DNG files(which show up in colour) on my LR Classic PP software, how ever I set my shooting menu to BW(Nat) so I see everything in BW during composition. During PP I will always convert to BW for a comparison view.
ejg1890 Posted April 16, 2022 Share #8 Posted April 16, 2022 I have the Q2M (B&W), M10-R(color) and M2 (film) - I'll take 1 camera and many times 2, but have never taken 3. May days will be B&W or color or both it all depends on several factors including sunset/sunrise (color), midday/harsh light (B&W), many colors involved (color), cloudy/grey day (B&W for mood). Several weeks ago I went on a hike along the Potomac River; shot the Q2M going out and the M10R coming back. Last weekend I hiked the US Arboretum and shot the M2 (B&W) since little was in bloom. nwphil Posted April 16, 2022 Share #9 Posted April 16, 2022 yes, sometimes I do a committed B&W outing, but also might carry both, and in that case the Q2M is more like just in case scene clearly will do best in B&W all my color cameras do have b&w mode - the Olympus actually allows to get a raw image, and the creative mode goes a bit further in jpeg mode. Once in color, I rarely switch while shooting. It's more of in post, playing around and sometimes works better in b&w. in sum, no, shooting in both same subject mode very rarely happens, and the days I carry a camera for no good reason, is always a color sensor
Anakronox Posted April 16, 2022 Share #10 Posted April 16, 2022 Very rarely. I vastly prefer my Monochroms unless I know specifically that I will make a color photo along the way. Take for instance visiting Times Square at night. I brought the Q2 for a few shots I knew I wanted, but otherwise kept on using my M10M for everything else. 99% of my output is in b/w so having both a color and mono camera on the same outing is rare. dancook Posted April 16, 2022 Share #11 Posted April 16, 2022 When I went to London to do some street photography, I took just the Q2M https://www.danielcook.com/index.php/2021/09/14/battersea-nine-elms-london/ But shooting some live music and reportage I took both https://gallery.danielcook.com/dirtycarols-halloween/ https://gallery.danielcook.com/tr5schurtvillagehall/ Guess it depends I wasn't going to get the Q2 again.. but after having a scene of my wife in front of a book store which I couldn't capture with the Q2M I decided I should have it as well.. Le Chef Posted April 16, 2022 Share #12 Posted April 16, 2022 I’m set up on the Q2 to show b&w in the EVF, but only shoot RAW/DNG. That way I compose in b&w and can then process in LightRoom and convert to b&w and use Silver EfexPro to do more work if I wish.
Mikael_L Posted April 16, 2022 Share #13 Posted April 16, 2022 I have the Q2 Monochrom (truly amazing camera) which I use as my main street-/urban camera but also another street oriented camera (Ricoh GRIII) for when I need the color option. I usually decide/set my mind up before I go out if I will shoot in B&W or in color depending on various things like weather/location/feel etc for that particular day as this works best for me not mixing things up, but I do cary both cameras with me and always shoot RAW/DNG. I would estimate that I shoot about 85/15 in favour of B&W compared to color right now.
Pelu2010 Posted April 16, 2022 Share #14 Posted April 16, 2022 Hey, if your pictures are shot in b&w monochrom and you wish to have colors , then you can colorize it with the AI of photoshop. Color is one click away. But when I shoot monochrom I search for compositions that work in b&w. Those comps work in color too, but then they are monochrom too. And the discussion is quite text heavy. Maybe show us some pictures. Then we can argue and define what would be great for you. The best advice I can think of is. Go to a good shop and check out the camera. Make a workshop. Or better make a trip to NYC and go to a Leica shop and book a workshop. if you commit to something like that you will find the light at the end of the tunnel. 😆 peter ps: there are online photoworkshops too …

That's what I would do too if I want some photos in B/W and that's for my taste enough good. The Q2M and any other dedicated B/W camera has it's reason for the B/W lovers/specialists but as im not one of them im fine with shooting in color and eventually convert them to B/W. ianforber Posted April 16, 2022 Share #16 Posted April 16, 2022 As others here, I have my Q2 set up with a B&W viewfinder and always go out shooting with the intention of producing black and white images. I process in Capture One and almost always SFX Pro. I don’t have the Q2M because every so often I do want a colour picture so having the Q2 gives me the best of both worlds. I accept that the Q2M is ultimately better than the Q2 for black and white but my images aren’t good enough to make it worthwhile!
