I believe that the 'New' type of non-corroding sensor / cover-glass used firmware 1.204 (and onwards) so you could check that info.

Yes but anyone with older sensors could update their firmware. It's pretty much meaningless unless the camera has the version that was installed by Leica during the replacement process and was never made public. I can't remember what version that was.

The sensor ID can be checked in the maintenance menu. Of course the best way to know if the sensor is the latest version is to ask Leica customer service. An email with the body serial number is all they need.

If so then I stand corrected, Ian.

For some reason - I thought I had read it in the M9 sub-forum at the time - I was under the impression that the sofware for the v2 sensor was incompatible with the v1 which is why, back in the day, the firmware was seen as a good indicator. Having gone through no fewer than 4 sensors with my M9-P it was a matter of some interest to me...

:)

But yes; writing to Leica is easily the most assured way of receiving accurate information.

For info, there were at least two further firmware updates following the one installed during the sensor installation process - well, the one installed on mine anyway, in summer 2016. These two subsequent firmware updates were AFAIK only to add support for the 28mm Summaron-M and then the Thambar-M.

Hi Ian. Yes; I had newer firmware installed on my M9-P - by Leica - on the two occasions when it went back for a v2 sensor (first v2 developed a line of dead pixels hence the second trip). What I'm unclear about is whether a camera with the v1 sensor would work with the new firmware. I'm pretty certain that I read there was incompatibility issues - and that might even have been done deliberately. But "I read it on the Internet therefore it must be true" is, very much, the name of the game!

:)

I'm sure the info I think I read is in this sub-forum somewhere but I don't have the time ATM to look for it.

Anyhow; asking Leica about the sensor in any prospective purchase is still the best way to go for a buyer.

Mmmmmm…. I don’t think that they would have made subsequent firmware release incompatible with v1 sensors for the simple reason that we can assume that there are still a good number of unaffected v1 sensors about and that some of those may belong to people who either just upgrade to the latest firmware for the hell of it (as plenty of people do) or they bought a Summaron-M or Thambar-M and wanted to take advantage of the six bit coding. Of course, I could equally be wrong and this post is again just something you will read on the internet :)

What would be extremely helpful would be for an M9 owner who has a body which still has the v1 sensor to inform us whether it has been possible to up-date to the very latest firmware. Looking forward to the inevitable avalanche of replies!

Or maybe do the “button dance” to access the debug menu and just check the sensor ID number as per multiple previous threads….

Don’t mean to be snarky. Think the relevant ID is 15 - there are threads at the time with all the info.

I agree, Nigel, but it's not everyone who knows the 'Button Dance' whereas the firmware version installed is openly displayed for everyone to see from the main menu. Hmmm...but having said that it's not everyone who would be au fait with the various firmware updates and their possible importance/implications...OK; I give up.

:)

In any case; as the OP has played no further part in their thread since the opening post; hasn't acknowledged any reply nor has been seen hereabouts for a week I suspect that - one way or another - they have resolved their situation.
