drmutzig Posted August 15, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a D-Lux 2 and copy the images to a Apple PowerBook G4 (via the USB cable plugged into a USB2 port). I have noticed that I get appalling performance when copying photos/movies. For example I copied over 75 RAW photo's and 75 of JPG - a total of around 1.2 GB. This took over 40 minutes! I have seen this also whilst copying standard photo's taken in JPG, but obviously nowhere near as poor as when I have 1.2GB full. I have worked the throughput to be around 512K per second is that what other user's are seeing? Thanks for any assistance!

Guest Metroman Posted August 15, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 15, 2006 I never hook the camera up directly to my 12" G4 Powerbook or my Macs. I use a Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 Reader and it downloads very fast, a lot faster than directly from the camera(s) I use. I only ever shoot in RAW format. amedick Posted August 16, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2006 I have the Panasonic version of the DLux2 for my wife, and have noticed the same thing. It has really hit me the last 2 days as we are travelling as a family, and my DL2 is so much faster on the same pc setup. It is clear to me the problem is the camera and / or camera settings, as the PC and memory cards are identical (using Ultra II Sandisk file). When I have some time will try playing with camera settings. Take Care
cbretteville Posted August 16, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2006 Is there a "mass storage" mode you haven't set? An extarnal card reader is a very nice accessory and they're not at all expensive.
sworks Posted August 16, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 16, 2006 German computer magazine c't tested the Panasonic LX-1 a few months ago and pointed out that there is implemented only USB 1. Nevertheless the Leica manual says that there is USB 2 (on an identical hardware base???) but keep in mind that USB 2.0 doesn't need to be USB 2.0 HighSpeed. The manual does not say that the connection runs at HighSpeed mode. Of course this thing does not make any fun when you want to download about 500 MB or something to the computer, so I bought an external SanDisk card reader especially for SD cards which can be directly plugged into my USB-2 port and the speed is really whopping. vic vic Posted August 16, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 16, 2006 yes - that is very true, it is very slow. the card reader is the best solution here - otherwise it takes entity to dopwload raws that fill 2gb card. other solution is to download only the selected files. it is very eassy with big thumbnails of image capture app or silverfast. drmutzig Posted August 17, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted August 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the assistance everyone. I ordered (yesterday) a card reader. Pity I had to do this though! Cheers
rtaibling Posted August 17, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 17, 2006 Slightly off-topic - I hadn't noticed a slow transfer, because nowadays (shooting RAW) I copy the basic .jpgs and transfer the RAW files by converting the 16.6 mB RAW files to Adobe .dng format files: the .dng files vary from 7 to 10 mB each, which takes up less space. I haven't noticed any difference in the image quality when I process 'em with PSCS 2 ... the conversion is also a leisurely process, so I just let it run in the background. Just a thought. ianforber Posted August 19, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 19, 2006 I too experience v slow copying when connecting the D-Lux 2 direct to a pc. I've read elsewhere that it is something to do with the images having to route through the cam's microprocessor. card reader the way to go.
