Hacker Posted September 10, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry for all the newbie quetions. I have done searches, but the answers to these two elude me: 1) Zeiss 18mm (Can this work with Zeiss 18)? 2) Tri-Elmar (WATE). For the filter, is there any sample to see? What is the difference between the one that Leica offers and this? Thanks! Stephen

Hacker Posted September 10, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted September 10, 2007 Hi hacker,For WATE, see thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/20384-wate-filtered.html mike Thanks for the info. Does it mean that the Lecia version does not hold the hood?
EricC Posted September 10, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 10, 2007 Thanks for the info. Does it mean that the Lecia version does not hold the hood? Yes, You cannot use a hood with the Leica version, plus a much larger, more expensive filter is required with the Leica version. Regards Eric
Hacker Posted September 10, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted September 10, 2007 Yes, You cannot use a hood with the Leica version, plus a much larger, more expensive filter is required with the Leica version. Regards Eric I cannot believe that Leica has such a product and you guys have confirmed it! Anyway, power to John. What now deters me is the taking out of the glass from an actual E49 filter. My other option is just to get the 18mm Zeiss. Does it mean a filter can work with this? Just code it as a WATE and select the 18mm?
EricC Posted September 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 10, 2007 I have the WATE with John's adapter and a genuine Leica UV/ir filter myself, and as a package it is excellent. John's adapter could have been made by Leica themselves, it is a perfect match for the WATE. Regards Eric
gtmerideth Posted September 10, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hacker, I took my Leica filter to a camera repair shop and the repairman removed the filter and installed it in the holder for $5, saving me many minutes of tense agravation. Worth every penny. g.
c6gowin Posted September 10, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 10, 2007 It is very simple to remove the glass from the Leica E49 filter so don't let that deter you. The Leica filter has a split ring holding the glass in place. All you have to do is take a small pointed object and pry out the edge of the split ring. Once you get it started, it is easy to grab with your fingers and complete the removal. The Milich adapter has a threaded retaining ring on the ID that you remove, place the filter glass in the adapter and then replace the threaded retaining ring. Hacker Posted September 10, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted September 10, 2007 I guess the adapter is absolutely necessary and from the look of it, it does the job, and does it perfectly well.. The reson I'm asking about this is because I'm not quite confortable with the size of the external VF, and a Zeiss 18 may be an option also using the 21/24/29 viewfinder instead. Anyone using the Zeiss ZM 18mm?.

I have two people (Robert White in the UK and Deacons in HK) watching out for the release of the 18 for me. Wilson

Wilson Update - I have just rechecked this evening on eBay and there are now a couple of Japanese sellers offering this lens Item number: 150156365294 - price is quite high - at least as much as Robert White is anticipating selling this for in the UK. Might be worth waiting a few weeks for sharp edges to wear off price. Wilson

If you look on the Zeiss website it says a 58mm filter. I would guess however it will use a unique hood. I already have to ones for the 35 and 21 Biogons but I am guessing they will not fit. Hacker Posted September 11, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted September 11, 2007 You are right, 58mm *phew*. I must have been mistaken with some other Zeiss lens or the site has an error. My bad,

robsteve Posted September 13, 2007 Share #18 Posted September 13, 2007 Is the Zeiss 18mm Rangefinder coupled? If it isn't, a coupled lens like the wate would be a better choice.
