leica dream Posted March 15, 2022 Share #1 Posted March 15, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) As evidenced by my infrequent posts on the forum I am a "casual" photographer, but following exchanges with Stuny several weeks ago I have resolved to carry my trusty CLUX with me continuously during my daily excursions with my Labrador and getting what I consider to be pleasing results. Hopefully in time I shall gain confidence enough to post some images either on the main threads or within the dedicated Leica C thread. Anyway, I have hit a problem because my iMac 27 inch still runs OSX 10.14.6 which is the 32 bit version. I keep getting banners requesting update to "Monterey" 12.3 which is 64 bit and realise that I should not shy from upgrading even though there are facilities which I am unlikely to use. I have reviewed all my applications and find that my trusty PS Elements 11 is 32 bit so will not run. I have Lightroom 5 which is 64 bit compatible and came with my CLux but I have never used so I am educating myself to switch to Lightroom for my basic needs. However both my SyderX Express and Colormunki colorimeters are not 64 bit compatible, so become useless if I upgrade to Monterey.. I cannot justify a fortune for Colorimeter replacement at my level of the hobby although I consider screen calibration to be essential even for a rank amateur linking with my Epson WF-3010 printer. Looking around the internet is confusing and not helpful so I wonder what suitable devices others can point me towards for what is probably going to be an entry level device but nevertheless delivers reliable results. Grateful for any input.
Advertisement Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 Hi leica dream, Take a look here Affordable 64 bit Colorimeter for MAC. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marchyman Posted March 16, 2022 Share #2 Posted March 16, 2022 https://calibrite.com/us/product/colorchecker-display-monitor-profiling/ is about $169. Calibrite is what used to be X-Rite. I've been using the Pro version (purchased as the i1 Display Pro) for many years now. Unlike the Spyder the software is updated so I haven't had to buy new hardware to support new computers. At least that was the case back in the Spyder 2 and 3 days. The Display version is what used to be i1Disoplay Studio and does not include ambient light monitoring. If you need support for HDR/super bright displays then you'd need the Display Plus -- expensive.
leica dream Posted March 16, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted March 16, 2022 Grateful thanks. I had got confused about what happened to X-Rite. I'll give this a look and assess options. I see the PRO version monitors ambient light levels instead of just measuring, and I don't understand those issues so shall research further appropriateness/costs for my basic needs. Your response has been most helpful, Thank you.
marchyman Posted March 17, 2022 Share #4 Posted March 17, 2022 The one I have supports ambient light levels. To use that option you keep the device plugged in sitting next to your monitor with some software running in the background of your machine. It apparently reads the ambient light from the device and adjusts your display. I write "apparently" because I've never used it. If I paid extra for that option it was, for me, a waste of money.
