Hi all,

I have a Summicron 50 DR from 1959 with the original silver lens cap and just recently purchased a 12585 lens hood with cap. My Summicron is currently undergoind CLA, hence I can only assume that the cap that came with the 12585 hood (that cap with the 2 cut-outs) can only be mounted when the hood has been mounted onto the lens reversed. If I want to keep the hood mounted on the lens protruding outwards, i.e. ready for shooting, and if I have a 39 mm filter (e.g. orange for BW) screwed into the filter thread of the lens, would it be possible and practical to just get a 39 mm snap-on lens cap to snap into the filter thread of the filter? Or in case the filter is not mounted, snap that into the filter thread on the lens directly?

I know these snap-on lens caps are quite horrible, but my intended configuration, it will nicely hide inside the hood, so hopefully no one will have to look at it.

Thanks for your advice,

Erik

Thanks, but my idea was actually to insert a 39 mm snap-on cap all the way into the step-filter thread on the 39 mm filter, or when no filter, snap it into the 39 mm thread of the lens itself.

I can see how it is difficult to snap a larger diameter snap-on cap into the tapered inside diameter of the most protruded portion of the hood.

Having just tried this out with my v4 50mm Summicron this is what I discovered;

The typical 39mm twin-clip 'unbranded' plastic caps Leica used will fit onto an e39 thread filter-ring inside the 12585. However when there is no filter on the lens the filter thread of the lens sits too low down inside the throat / clip-part of the 12585 for me to be able to operate the cap's clips as the distance between the inner edge of the hood and the outer edges of the cap do not leave quite enough space for my fingertips to push the clips to allow fitment of the cap.

It works with the filter fitted for two reasons (AKAICT); firstly the filter's threads are, subsequently, further forward in the throat of the hood than when the lens is filter-less and secondly the filter-ring of a Leica E39 filter is narrower - in terms of diameter - than is the front of the lens itself leaving more space for adquate fingertip access.

It might be that someone with even daintier fingers than myself would be able to manipulate the clips but my own digits are hardly sausage-like...

It might also be the case that any generic cinch-clip type cap will work but I don't have any so cannot comment further on that score.

Philip.

EDIT : This is the type I tried;

Ah! There are snap-on clips that don’t operate on the outside of the cap’s circumference but on the inside of the front surface. Those might work better.

Yes; they might. Unfortunately though, as I mentioned at the end of my earlier post, I don't have any of those (in 39mm fit) here so can't comment with any certainty but as long as the outer edge of the cap can fit inside the 12585's clip they might well be a better option as they may allow for use when no filter is fitted.

Good luck!

Philip.

I just ordered such a snap-on cap. As soon as I have my Summicron 50 back from CLA, I will post how it works - with and without filter.

I know one might argue that there is no need for a cap when you have a filter and the hood mounted, but I would prefer it for storage at home or in the camera bag.
