jamriman Posted September 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I got my new 21 zeiss 4.5 flange coded by Don G. Doesn't work. I tried recoding and tried slight changes in lens rotation to see if I can change the alignment. Nothing works. The only thing I can think of is to have another zeiss flange milled and tested to see if the coding actually works. (Don unfortunatly did not test it beforehand). Any other suggestions? gravastar Posted September 9, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 9, 2007 This is a longshot but does the 21mm Zeiss lens bring up the same frame lines as the Leica 21mm/2.8. If it doesn't that could be the problem. The M8 has switches to read the frame lines selected by the lens and if they're not the same as Leica's 21mm then the software may not cooperate. It may be possible to check this by manually holding the frame selector lever in each of the 3 positions when you mount the Zeiss lens/turn on the camera and see if that works. If this is the case then the lens bayonet may need modification or for Zeiss to supply an alternative bayonet to bring up the correct frame. Bob. ho_co Posted September 9, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2007 I think Bob is right. Not all ZM bayonets bring up the same frame lines as the Leica equivalents. Just put the lens on the camera, and then make two exposures: You already know that the lens ID doesn't work if the frame preview selector is in the position the lens assigns it, so just move it by hand to make an exposure at each of the other positions. One of those images may recognize the lens as you want. If so, you can modify or exchange the bayonet; or you can simply hold the preview lever in the right position when you use the lens. If that suggestion doesn't work, Here's another long shot: Check Reid's reviews of wide angles for M. I could be wrong, but as I recall, one of them--maybe this one--wouldn't work with the expected Leica coding. I think it was a 21, and he ended up coding it as a 28 instead. sean_reid Posted September 9, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) As I wrote about in my review of 21 mm lenses on the M8 (and as people have mentioned above), one needs to have the bayonets replaced on the Zeiss 21 and 25 in order for either to trigger the correct frame lines in the Leica M8. The coding would then be done with the new bayonets. The 21 needs a 28/90 bayonet and the 25 needs a 35/135 bayonet. If you've held the frame line indicator in the 28 position while making the exposure and *not* seen "21" appear in the review info. afterwards, one of two things is probably wrong. A. The coding recesses are not aligning correctly B. There is a problem with the way those recesses are painted. I'd start with the correct bayonet and go from there. This thread from May tells you how to do it for the 2.8 but it should be similar: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/20663-zeica-21-2-8-a.html If the coding is on the wrong mount, you have to push the frameline lever over for it to work. No need to remount. If it does not work then either the coding is in the wrong place or you are using the wrong code. You need to paint the screw over as well with white to get the right code.
