Olaf_ZG Posted January 29, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last year I bought into the m-system after starting my Leica affair with a Q. I do enjoy the m’s and soon will add some more lenses. next to Leica, i have a gfx50r which i mainly use for long exposures: between 2 and 16 minutes during day time. my m’s are for b/w, the gfx for colour. Two systems, two types of lenses, twice the weight. I am considering the sl2(s), so i can use my m lenses, add eventually a l-mount for wide angle, reducing the weight significant. I read a lot about LENR with the SL and using capture one, I do hope, files will come out great. what i would miss is the tiltable screen, very handy when the cam is either low or above eye level on the tripod. what do you think, could the SL replace my gfx? Could I use the app instead of a tiltable screen? Will the files have same tonality? Could i use images without LENR? Sadly, in my country leica is not available so trying out is tough… thanks. Thanks, I was hoping that due to newer technology, it could. I really love the files from the gfx, but don’t like to carry two systems… I hoped the SL could come close, so I could simplify my gear. beewee Posted January 29, 2022 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2022 (edited) The SL2 (and Q2) sensor, for one reason or another, doesn’t have as much dynamic range as other current cameras. The SL2-S has one of the best dynamic range of any Leica body. At the lowest ISO setting, it is only surpassed by the M11 when shot below ISO 100. Above ISO 100, it’s essentially equivalent to the M11 until ISO 800 and higher, where the SL2-S again has the edge over the M11. The SL2 and Q2 on the other hand has about 1 to 1.5 stop lower dynamic range than other current full frame Leica bodies, across all ISO.. I’ve been very happy with the dynamic range, noise, and colour of the SL2-S. If you’re ok with 24 MP, the SL2-S will produce cleaner images, especially when shot at high ISO and will produce very decent low noise images even when shot at ISO 12500. In the shot below, the foreground was completely black to the naked eye and yet the SL2-S was able to pick up colour information in the grass. Shot at ISO 12500 Welcome, dear visitor! You can see from the aurora that even at high ISO, the shades transitions very smoothly without a hint of banding. Shot at ISO 100, under exposing and maxing out the highlight recovery while recovering shadows, you can see all the very subtle gradations and texture in the snow and sky, while keeping the colour information in the very dark pine trees in the back.
