Hi,

I'm finally ready to make the switch to Leica digital after the release of the M11, but there is one thing that is holding me back: I have 3 original Leica lenses, none of which are encoded.

Encoding lenses by yourself requires some tinkering which I'm not sure I want to do, b/c I don't want to break my precious lenses, also I read that people have mixed success rates.

Sending my lenses to Leica is expensive and takes months (!!!) to finish, according to online reports.

So what do I do if I cannot encode the lenses right now? I cannot find the manual for the M11 online, but according to the M10 manual, you have to go into some deeply nested menu and then get presented with a list of a gazillion of lenses and it's up to you to find the right one.

This is not ideal.

I only have a handful of lenses, and I suspect this applies to about 90% of Leica photographers. Why can't I just select the unencoded lenses I own (call it "add to favorites", if you will), and each time I attach an unencoded lens, I get presented with a prompt of the ones I have, and I pick the right one out of 3. Quick and easy.

This would be good enough to spare me having to wait for months for my encoding to be done at Leica. I'd buy a new M11 full price to make Leica happy, and this would take the pressure out of their customer service, which seems a bit overloaded these days, to make other customers happy. It's a win-win-win.

So, does the M11 have a feature like this? If not, is there a way to pitch this feature to Leica firmware developers? Having this would make me very happy, and I'd buy an M11 in an instant.

Regards

This is exactly what the new M11 allows you to do. You can create your own favorite list of uncoded lenses, and then simply select the one you want to use from that list. The M11 is the first digital M camera to offer such a feature.

One of my lenses (a 24 Elmarit-M ASPH) is uncoded and I just don't worry about it.

If you only have unencoded, you don't have a problem, b/c according to reports on the web, it will always fall back to the last unencoded one. So it's always correct for you.

But I have 3. This means I have to go into this cumbersome deeply nested menu and pay great attention to not select the wrong Summicron. This makes it much harder than it should be.

Is this true? I really didn't expect this. Do you have a source for this you can post, so I can read up on it? If this is true, it's like birthday & Christmas together!

I "only" have an M240. If you have an uncoded lens, the camera doesn't know what lens you have mounted, unless, as you say, you head off to the menu and find your lens.

A 24 Elmarit isn't on the list, btw, which is why I haven't bothered. If you can now set up your own list, then that is a big improvement, but I would suspect that the 24 elmarit still isn't there.

Yes, this is true. I got this information from the new features of the M11 versus the previous models. Just have a look at Leica's own statements in this regard. I can't remember exactly where I have read it, and I am sure it was in German language, as I am a native German speaker. But you will find.

Absolutely true don’t have the link to the manual handy but I would trongly suggest you tell us which lenses they are with model numbers so it can be confirmed that they are in the list.

great review! Info you are looking for is in the changed menu section

Andy, I almost cannot believe that. Many older lenses ARE on the list (Summicron 35 v4 to name but one), so I would be very suprised if the 24 Elmarit were not listed in the M10 and M11 cameras.

I have the 35 and 50 Cron, and the 90 Elmarit, so pretty common lenses. According to online sources, they were all available in previous M models.

I only found the official "List of 6-bit update capable M lenses for digital use", which includes the "Elmarit-M 1:2,8/24 mm ASPH.". This is no confirmation it's available in the camera menu, but I would be puzzled to find out this lens can be encoded, but not manually selected.

I had a look when I first bought the camera, but haven't bothered since. I will do so and report back.

The common lenses will definitely be there. The 24 Elmarit is a forgotten gem of a lens

No problem. Just make sure you select the correct version of your lens from the list

Thanks both. Yes, the 24 Elmarit is there, but in order to use it I have to set the detection to "Manual", which means that I have to remember to set it back to "Auto" every time I change to one of my other two lenses, both of which are coded.

The 24 Elmarit does have a 6bit code according to La Vida Leica:
https://lavidaleica.com/content/leica-lens-codes

It might be a different version that you have, I don't know enough about these lenses, but at least it's pretty close.

I'm currently browsing the German version of the Leica website to find confirmation for this, but no trace.

Ah well, I guess it's time for a trip to my favourite photo store in Hamburg with a bag of my lenses and just ask. I still don't know when I have time for this, but I'll report back once this is done. Thank you all for your input!

I think I have found it again. Jono Slack mentionend the following in his report on the new M11:

The Lens Detection menu is much improved with an option to 'Edit list of M lenses' and also 'Edit List of R lenses'. When you choose this the list presents all the lenses just as it did with the M10, but you can switch lenses off and on. This means that if you just have a couple of uncoded lenses, when you choose Manual M you are presented with those lenses (with Edit List at the bottom). For example my list looks like:

  • 35 f1.4 11869/11870/11860
  • 90 f2.8 11807/11808
  • 50 f1.4 11868/11856/11114
  • Edit List of M lenses

As before it remembers the last used uncoded lens and uses that as the default.

You owe me a beer 🙂.
