I have a Q2M and love it. It is such a unique and powerful camera. To be interested in a Q3 or a Q3P (2023/24), it has to be (ideally) something like that

  • 24 or 36 or 47 MP. The current 47MP is excellent, but the files (gorgeous) are enormous; I would prefer 36 or even 24MP.
  • 35/1.4 (or 1.7) Summilux. It's a NO for again 28mm or 50mm. I want 35mm
  • with the same iso performance of the Q2M. Maybe in two years, it will be possible.
  • A joystick to better deal with AF

For the rest, I wouldn't change anything. At least something necessary that I recall.

The files are huge because Leica doesn't use lossless compression on the Q2 DNG files. I hope the Q3 processor will be able to handle that task, because the lossless compressed files are almost half the size of the the uncompressed files. But the workaround isn't too hard – I copy all my Q2 files to a folder called "DNGs to Convert" and use the free Adobe DNG Converter program to batch convert/save them to a folder called "DNG Converted" – from there I move them to where I want them to live and then import them into Capture One. No loss in quality, just the bloat is gone.

Agree about the joystick – What a joy it would be to have the SL2/SL2-S joystick implementation on the Q3! 😁

I didn’t know this trick to downsize the DNG size, awesome. Thank you, I will try it. I use JPEGmini Pro to decrease size, but only for the exported files.

The only potential downside of this method is the DNG "date modified" you see on your computer when browsing files is changed to the date/time you did the conversion. (no change to the EXIF data thankfully)

If you have LRC. Just use the function on the menu : update Metadata and preview. It will perform a lossless compression ! It will also preserved original metadata !

I do this every time I import and it halves the size of the files!!

Ricoh’s move is really interesting!

They did not go Sigma route with multiple dp Merril cameras with different focal lengths.
A bad camera will not sell no matter what.
A bad camera will never be sold multiple times to the same person !!

As owner of all 3 DP Merrill models I strongly disagree with that statement. those cameras are brilliant for what they are and their intended purpose.

I would not buy a 50mm Q3,
not on day 1 and not on day 1000, because I am happy with the 28mm as this lens do what I want and need.

But I may would think to buy the Q3 with a at least 105mm tele with macro function and maybe another with a 10/-15mm diagonal fisheye or a non distorting WA.

But then it would be probably lighter and less bulky to buy a SL2 and the corresponding lenses...

Then buy the 28mm version. A 50mm won't supersede the 28mm, it would live alongside it. It's not that hard, really.

@Herr Barnackthen why does Leica make so many other lenses? If we could do it all with a 28mm, there is no need, but somehow there is a need, and the reason is not only not being close enough.

in other words, I respectfully disagree with what you said and hope there will be  a 35 or bigger…

As I said above,

Quote

...When you can't zoom with your legs - as in when you are at the edge of the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls, mount your 50, 75, 90 0or 135mm lens.

Sometimes, you just need a longer lens due to physical constraints such as when your toes are sticking over the edge of a half mile deep canyon and you can't zoom with your feet.  Or when you need more working distance so as to not interfere with or influence the behavior of your subjects.

Somewhere between a lot of the time and most of the time, you can use one lens and zoom with your feet.  At least that has been my experience.

As for a Q3 with a 50mm Summilux, I would be glad to see one.  I would not be opposed to such an offering from Leica, just surprised to see it.

...then why does Leica make so many other lenses?

Uh, maybe because people want them and keep buying them perhaps??

Steven has seen the Q3 in development and said was a very long way from being ready. No timeframe, but I was getting late 2023 vibes :)

Follow up with official word:

NOT. THIS. YEAR.

5:14 mark

Hey ,

i just shot with a gimbal the last two weeks and if there is one Q3 coming out then the biggest improvement for me would be >>>> usb c port <<<<<<

1. I can Thether the camera with an app in real-time and get instant feedback.

2. I can remote control the camera on a gimbal

3. Timelapse will start to make fun

4. I can charge the camera on location or at night without charger!

Combine this with IBIS and a back illuminated CMOS

and I would be very happy.

5. over this usbc we could also get a good mic and headphone connection and tada 🎉

Mini Cine Camera !

cheers

They'd also have to remove the 30 minute limit. It is so 1990s.

Hi -- Is there any way to do this on Lightroom Desktop/CC (NOT LR Classic, but LR CC or whatever you want to call it) after the fact to my whole library?

Is there a way to do this directly in LR (again, NOT LR Classic) when you import the photos?

(If not... there should be?)

I only use Classic.

See if Google knows or try the Adobe support forums.
