In all fairness Jono, Leica neutered the M summarits with sub par accessories, half hearted max apertures and onerous MFD’s.  Had they simply created a full complement of normally specced elmarits they would still be in the catalogue.

Regarding MFD, the 90mm Summarit is an exception because it focuses closer than the 90mm Elmarit. I just don't like rubber focus rings.

Ah - well, I totally disagree, the Summarits were small, faster than elmarits and lovely optically. Nobody who can afford Leica stuff can bring themselves to buy something they perceive of as second best 🤷‍♂️

Using the old style typeface for the engravings was also a dick move. Want to send a signal that these lenses are lesser than? Make them not match your "better" stuff.

I couldn't agree more. Although, unless you are in Noctilux territory, a half a stop doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

All told it was a tough lessen for Leica to learn - a properly appointed line of basic elmarit lenses (much like the 28/2.8 ASPH), would have made a perfect entry point into the world of M lenses.
