Great composition and beautiful location. But in this case, I think the background is so important that it should have been as sharp as the foreground; I feel the slightly blurred background is a bit distracting. But perhaps such a large depth of field was difficult to achieve here.

Thank you - your critique is valid and I'm sure there are many others that agree: "I wish I could see more detail of that beautiful church". However I am instinctually a street photographer and my approach to any scene I find is focused on a more humanist result than a pure landscape. Hence the narrow focus - I shot this at 1/60, f/4.8, ISO400 with a 28 Elmarit so I easily could have set it to zone focus at around f/8 with a slight bump in ISO where everything would have been in focus and the results would have been stellar with the M11. I actually went back to check if I shot any of just the church and found I had only shot three shots similar to what we see in my post - I suppose we saw so many beautiful church interiors in Rome that I had become jaded to my surroundings...

Thank you, I recognize myself in what you say. I shoot a lot of portraits, so getting the background sharp is not what I usually think about.

I would like to comment that the blurred background here is necessary to bring focus to the subject  - which isn't the church but the man IN the church. If it was all in focus - what would be the subject? My 2¢

Playing with a Nikon 55mm Micro - really old manual focus version. Surprisingly good on the Leica!

If the image is well composed, the main subject stands out, even if everything is equally sharp. It feels a bit strange for me to say this, as I've long been a supporter of shallow depth of field. But in this case, I just thought the church was too nice to be blurred.

But of course, I fully understand other opinions too.
