That's actually a good question.  As a staff photographer at a newspaper, I remember where I used the Nikon and Leica M6 as my professional equipment.  That was in the 90s.  Many of my colleagues did the same.  It stopped with the digital and today I see no Leica M among colleagues.  I have ALWAYS had M and Leica, but have to admit that I use it very little professionally.  But it's definitely the camera I love to use the most.  But the problem is it can not stand alone.  I have to bring my Nikon too and then Leica gets in the way.  I really hope that changes with the Leica M11.  I think Leica 11 will be a fresh start.  I see Leica q more often among colleagues.  That leica with the new M11 is trying new things is very positive.

No***, but others have. As a reformed professional musician, when I left that life behind I swore I'd never again deal with the business of the arts. When in later life I became serious about photography, I had no desire to transgress that oath. I made a pact with myself that no matter how tempting defraying some of the costs might be, I would never charge for a session nor sell a photograph, only gift them or insist that any compensation be donated to charity. I've donated both works as well as time to several charities and arts organization which have been published or sold through auction. But other than taking a modest deduction for materials at years end, I derive no financial benefit from the images I make, only spiritual ones. 

*** in the interests of full disclosure, I did work a few summers as a pro shooting large format at a portrait studio back in my college days.

Most of my print sales have come from images made with my M-P 240.

Sales have been so brisk over the years that I have been able to finance the acquisition of a Harry Benz B strap as a result of the torrential cash flow.

To be honest I don’t need photography work to be poor, I can manage that anyway - years ago I had a vaguely passable sideline in photography but that’s long gone, so now when someone approaches me with an interesting project or there’s an opportunity to display my work and earn a bit of money that’s great, but what’s really great is that my photography is really just for me, I shoot when and what I like and I find that really rewarding and free

I was a newspaper photographer for about thirty years, until the recent industry decline. Like you I used Leica M and Nikon until we all transitioned to digital. After being laid off I landed on my feet with a staff position doing magazine and light commercial work. It was tough transition from being a photojournalist for all my life. I'm still freelancing some news and pro sports.

About five years ago I picked up digital Leica M cameras and it was like returning home. It was the best thing I ever did to get back to the work I loved doing. I'm now using and M10-R and M10-P daily and only pick up the Canons for sports and lighting. I call my Leicas my mid-life crisis red sports car. I think I made the right call. I can see myself getting an M11 eventually.

Wonderful story.  I would also like to have M11.  I have M9 and an MD and most tasks indoors (I use most existing lights) the are Leica MD is not good enough.  the competition in the photojournalist profession today is very hard.  I hope the leica M11 will be a turning point for me there.  But I must say that the leica M is probably mostly a luxury for me - the Leica is not paid for by the customer. It's just an expense. I get a brand new set of Canon R3 2 pcs and various lenses at the end of February.

I invest...er, I mean "waste"... most of my money on guitars.  They do about as well investment-wise as Leica Cameras. 🤔  Yes, if you have a family heirloom 1930's Martin D18/28/45, that's a different deal.  But I don't.

Anyway, a couple of months ago I sold two photos - both converted to B&W via the "Noir" filter in Apple Photos.  I had no intention of doing so but a shop owner saw them, via a friend to whom I had sent them.  The shop owner suggested I let him print/display them.  I agreed and he printed them as 16x20 and framed them.  After they sold he asked me if I would take/send him additional photos.  My response was (more or less), "Thank you, that's quite a compliment.  But no."  

I have been involved in an "artistic" enterprise where an interest/hobby became a misery because I took it into the "pro" world.  What had been fun/relaxing/interesting turned into a frantic attempt to meet deadlines/demands.  

FWIW, One of the photos I sold was shot with my M10, the other with my iPhone 11 Pro.

I only use my Leica M for free projects, which I eventually sell, but since journalism is in a big crisis, there is not much money around. I would probably not use my M for commercial projects or portrait shootings for papers with only 5 minute of time. For me, the camera then is too cumbersome to use and not reliable. It has its own way to shine, but it definitely does not boost my income.

I shoot portraits and boudoir for private clients.

If you want to sell photographs, the platform doesn’t matter, it does not work that way unless you want to be a stock photographer (and that too is real work, they have enough flowers and sunsets).  People need to have an emotional connection to an image before they think about paying for it, or they need to think it’ll make them money somehow.
