hi,

I am about to buy RNI 5 for Lightroom classic. I use it on my iPad Pro. do you think is it still worth to pay 192 USD in 2025? Do you think will there be an upgrade like RNI 6 nowadays?

It's quite a steep price, but I still don't think there are many real competitors. I asked them once if they were considering adding more film types. For example, I would very much like to see a Fuji Neopan 1600. But they never responded to my inquiry. To stay relevant, they should come up with something new soon. But don't get your hopes up too high.

My criterium would be the Kodak E100 slide film, it is a very special film with - at the moment - unique colors and difficult for me to emulate. The price of this film is insane, the break-even point would be 10 films (in the Netherlands it would be even 7 films), if RNI 5 would do it well.

Worth considering Boris Optics, that has amongst other effects a multitude of film and film grain effects

I like this one as a portrait. As an example concerning the topic of this thread I’m a bit disappointed. #436, -7 and -8 do not differ in a convincing way, whereas these films do differ a lot in reality. You have experimented a lot with the software RNI you use and have recommended for these conversions, how do you evaluate this software in the end?

Thank you! I 'm probably a bit conservative and usually choose a film simulation that doesn't differ too much from the original. In a side-by-side comparison, however, you would see a certain difference. Perhaps I should continue to post the images with and without the film profile.

Actually, I don't use film simulations that much anymore, and usually only in cases where the lighting conditions weren't optimal and I'm trying to “save” an image by turning it into something other than what it was anyway.

So this is perhaps something you get a little tired of after a while. It's nice to have as a tool you can use occasionally, but in the long run, I think the natural colors from the Adobe Standard profile are still the best.
