jaapv Posted September 5, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Planning on a stay in the African Bush I needed some more batteries. I already have four Leica ones, and as these are for emergency use only, I ordered a a couple from Hong Kong. I can only say: beautifully made - better than Leica and better fit. One needed a reset out of the box, the other was fine. The only niggle: The camera seems to start up a bit slower.
Advertisement Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Hi jaapv, Take a look here 3rd party batteries - again. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Hookeye Posted September 5, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 5, 2007 Jaap, - I also stayed out in the African bush for a while, albeit before the age of the M8. Although there was no electricity where we stayed, I was in fact never far away from a 12 or 24 volt car or truck battery, or even a solar panel setup. Since I had brought a simple wire with two crocodile clips at one end and the plug to my charger at the other - I was always able to charge batteries. Just be sure as hell you do not mix up the "+" and "-" when clipping onto the car battery. Wish you a good trip, and look forward to seeing your photos:) . marknorton Posted September 5, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 5, 2007 The 12v battery imput of the M8 charger is polarity protected to prevent this problem.
bayerische Posted September 5, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 5, 2007 This sounds great, did you buy them via ebay?
rbaron Posted September 5, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 5, 2007 I bought 4 of the third-party batteries from an eBay vendor in June. 3 of them no longer take a full charge. YMMV.
gravastar Posted September 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 5, 2007 I bought 4 of the third-party batteries from an eBay vendor in June. 3 of them no longer take a full charge. YMMV. I have a similar problem with a third party battery. Initially it was fine but after about 5 charge discharge cycles it would no longer charge for more than 5mins in the Leica charger. Maybe the battery terminal voltage is a few millivolts higher than the leica ones causing the charger to terminate prematurely. There may be nothing intrinsically wrong with the battery - just not compatible with the end point set on the charger. Bob.

In my experience the battery in the car is around, but normally the cigarette lighter socket has disappeared....So indeed I would have to take crocodile clips. Well. six batteries is at least 1800 shots... Thanks..
GarethC Posted September 6, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 6, 2007 I bought two from a vendor on ebay and they charged once and then wouldn't take a charge. Tried contacting them and didn't even respond. I rarely go through one battery so will buy and Adorama or B and H one ofr the backup until I must buy another primary battery and that will be a Leica. Shootist Posted September 6, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 6, 2007 For all that have aftermarket batteries that don't seem to take a full charge. Drain the battery in the camera overnight, then recharge it. That is what I had to do with the 2 I have had. Once I do that they seem to take the charge and work for that one charge. Then you have to do the drain again.
