Hi All. New to the forum but looking for some community support. Im in need of separating the lens group from the focus mechanism on my 90mm Summicron. Ive had good success with a 50mm in the past however there are a few video tutorials knocking around that got me started. Does anyone have any experience with the 90mm (the version with the retractable hood) I cant work out how to do it. I unscrewed what looked like it could be a locking retainer at the back of the lens. However this didnt work it just released one of the rear elements. Any help would be amazing. Thanks!

Umm - every 90mm Summicron since 1960 or so has had a retractable hood. In four very different models. Which one did you have in mind?

Here's a link (with pix) for that version, "disassembled" accidentally. See post #12 for image.

Looks like it just takes brute force to fracture the "Lock-tite" or "Super-glue" thread cement on a single internal master connecting thread.

Because of the free-spinning lens hood, you need to extend that and then grasp the lens barrel/aperture ring underneath (or, as in this case, a jammed filter) and just "gorilla" it off.

But I don't know if that is actually the approved or recommended method, and I suspect Leica doesn't expect anyone but a qualified tech to do it. ;)

It is not supposed to come apart outside of the factory or a repair center.

Hi Adan

Again, thank you for the reply and sharing your knowledge. Its very much appreciated. I did figure that this might be the solution and did try this initially. The Problem I had was that under the retractable hood is another sleeve type part that has the dot on as the witness mark for the Iris. as I tried to unscrew, I shifted this sleeve, which wasnt the nicest feeling or sound in the world ;)

That is what led me here to ask if that was what I needed to do and not totally butcher it. Now that I have this info I will try again or try slipping the sleeve up out the way and grabbing onto what is underneath.

One last question for you, how simple is it to remove the retractable hood? That is my next task, im sure I will be able to work it out, but if you have come across this before, it might save some worry!

Thanks again

Hi Adan.

Thanks so much for the reply. It appears to be the 3rd one down. It has a serial of 3211585 which from looking seems like its some where around 1982 date of manufacture? It is a non asph version.

This one is not to be unscrewed like the former 90mm Summicron.

I had a couple of those and never tried to unscrew anything.

Hi A.Noctolux

Interesting. How would they be separated then? There is no obvious way. Unless I have to unscrew the front element. (Surely not)

My lens does look exactly the same as the image in post 12 in the thread that Adan posted a link to which looks like it just unscrews.

I think it's an accident.

This lens E55 filter type is not officially with detachable head.

Exactly! I know its not supposed to happen in general every day use (i.e to swap optical block etc) but that is what I want to do. To separate it.

I wish you success doing it, and most important to get back without flaw.

Did you manage to remove the hood? I had to take off the retaining ring for the hood to use a filter so I released the hood and now I can't make them collapse on each other properly and the barrel comes in till about 4m only not to infinity. I can't find anything about it. thanks
