John Z. Goriup Posted October 30, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) After becoming the first German ( and the first cosed ) car to ever win the 24 Hours of Lemans endurance race in '52, the factory decided to build 10 road-legal 300 SL coupes, plus an 11th ( W194 / 11) to use as a prototype 'development mule'. This is the actual car Rudolph Uhlenhaut used to test a number of subtle but significant changes which made the Gullwing such a sensation. The press named the car "Hobel", German for woodworker's plane, due to the unique, windtunnel developed front & grill opening. Today, a permanent part of the M-B museum collection of historic milestones. SL / 24-90 V.E. JZG Welcome, dear visitor! John Z. Goriup Posted October 30, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) Had I been one of the press / motorsports reporters invited to attend the unveiling & first public showing of the 300SL on a straight stretch of the Autobahn near Stuttgart, I would have asked the editors to chose this photo. Thanks for looking, JZG Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
