Grip is a must. I bought a leica grip and then bought a Luigi half case with what I thought was a leather accommodation for the leica grip. Wrong! The Luigi case has a grip of its ownand a good one. so, I have a new Leica grip which I'd sell.

Brad

Worth noting that Luigi will make you a case that accommodates an already-fitted Leica grip, if you want it. Best of both worlds (when you take the case off, you still have a grip fitted.) It costs the same as his half-case with grip. I'm ordering one, but am being held up by the rather arcane PayPal registration process...

Guy,

Also remember that you have to make a special arrangement with Luigi, if you are paying via credit card to Paypal. If you have not already done so, I would talk to Luigi about the case. When I last spoke to him, he was saying that although he did make a case to accommodate the Leica grip, he was not really recommending it, as he felt it was a bit too bulky. In the end I decided to stick with my Leica grip and no case, as I personally was also not too sure if I would like the LCD cover arrangements, notwithstanding that like all of Luigi's stuff, it will be immaculately made. I have two of his straps and the very neat spare battery/card case.

You can't because the attachment point on the film M grip is on one side, it attaches to the tripod screw hole.

You can spend $5000 on a camera but you can't afford a $200 grip. The Luigi case is that much if not more.

Yup, I cant afford a $200 grip, actually I can, but I'd rather use the money towards another lens.

I'm a pensioner, and I have to be careful. The grip is a luxury I can do without, camera is fine without it, but I really do want a 50mm Summilux.

I suppose it's a case of priorities. In the meantime, I've ordered a Leica sling for $15.

Get your SLING for the Leica M!

That's a smart move! I would not like to compromise the looks of the M8 with a grip.

I got my Sling today, and I'm LOVIN´ IT!

I guess I will be in a minority here but, I was never a fan of grips, winders or motors on M bodies. In my humble opinion they take away from the compactness of the Leica, this could however be influenced by my having used M's for close 30 years and being comfortable with and used to the shape of the unhindered body.

The M8' body covering is quite slippery - the Thumbs Up accessory is an excellent idea and looks indeed to be very well made. Lack of an accessory shoe would present a problem for me however, as I use the 15mm Heliar and 21mm ASPH - both requiring separate finders. Also, its protrusion could potentially catch on one's clothing.

Here is my solution - an adhesive rubber bumper from a harware store; I attached to the M8 a couple of days after receiving it:

Best,

Jan

Check out my friend Tim Isaac's clever "Thumbs Up" which he assures me he is very close to shipping!

Collection: Thumbs Up model 1, model 2 and model 3 for the Leica M8 and other M's- thumb grip design

Hi Joe

Nice idea - but I keep a 21mm viewfinder permanently mounted on my M8 for use with the CV 15mm - the 'Thumbs Up' pre-empts this. Is it possible Tim might do a model 4 with an accessory shoe mounted on the bit that goes in the accessory shoe...?

I agree with you about the grips on film M's. Never used one with any that I have owned. But with the M8 the covering is a bit slippery. After putting the grip base on the M8 I actually bought one for my film M. I had it on all of about 15-20 minutes. Didn't like it.

This is apparently planned. Tim has met with Tom Abrahamsson (of Rapidwinder and Softie fame) and exchanged some ideas as to how this could be done. One possibility is apparently machining a slot into the Thumbs Up, which would accept a similarly machined accessory shoe.

Best,

Jan

My own view is that there should be a model of the Thumbs Up with a permanently fixed shoe with contacts for flash as well (full feed through of all contacts for GNC etc). OK it would be considerably more expensive but that is the model I feel most would go for.

I second the Luigi case with the grip. I found it to be much better than the Leica options (both case and grip)
