No cause that I am aware of David.  I would normally have an expectation that it would be caused by a drop or bang when the lens was fully extended but have no memory of that happening. I suppose a possible wear and tear issue from normal use but that seems less likely.

If you know that the slackness is causing unsatisfactory optical performance,  I believe you should consider sending the lens to your local Leica customer support for investigation. Discernible slackness might deplete resale value of the lens even if optical performance is satisfactory.  It is your value judgement.

I have had several copies of the 18-56 .. they both had this issue to a similar, albeit a slight  degree.  It was never and issue with the optical performance,  I just think that tolerances with plastic constuction  are difficult to maintain..even for Leica.  I am aware that they wanted to keep these lenses light weight. However, due to the plastic parts, the build quality never impressed me.
