I bought a used M7 and mostly just shoot manual, today I tried out auto and noticed it isn't adapting to being pointed at different things, am I missing something in how to use that mode?

To be specific, when I flip it on, it says the film speed for a few seconds. If in manual mode, meter works fine, just like my mp. But if in auto mode, when you extremely lightly tap the shutter and then let go, it gets an accurate read and won't move the reading until it times-out, whether I've changed the aperture or pointed it directly at a light. It also displays dot on the top left of the shutter speed. It's like it's locked or something.

Anyone experienced that? Hope I'm just doing something dumb!

I tried with my M7.

When the shutterspeed dial is on AUTO and i point the camera with lens in different directions, the shutter speed (as shown in the viewfinder) varies. What you describe indicates that the Metering memory-lock is on.

This only can be done by pressing the shutter release button to its second pressure point to measure and
lock the value. As long as the pressure is maintained, a red point appears in the viewfinder at the top of the numerical line as confirmation and the speed value does not change, even if the brightness conditions do so.

But if the red point still is there after you take the finger of the shutter release button, i assume there is something wrong.
