Always wanted a black paint M2 or M3, but could never afford one, not a genuine one anyway. So back in 2013, I got a cheap standard chrome M2 from Red Dot Cameras. Vulcanite was peeling off the back door, the controls were stiff, and the viewfinder was dim.

Sent the camera off to Kanto, and they transformed it into this. It's now smooth, quiet, and the viewfinder is bright and accurate. I've put 160+ rolls of film through it since. It never misses a beat. It might not be a 'real' black paint, but it's a real M2.

Couldn't they have also repainted it? Or you just didn't want them to?

Here's my M4 with M2/3 style levers. Just got back from a shutter repair and overhaul by Sherry Kräuter and it's rarin' to go.

I always like it when an M4 (or M6) has M2/3 style levers substituted.  Good job!

More important Colin, much more important than the wealth of idiotic nonsense that recently has been flying around on "brassing" M's on these forum pages, is that you do use your gear to great effect, as all of your image postings have shown here on the forum these past years. You are one of the very very few photographers who's work shown here means something to me and I look forward to your posts, you've a real "photographer's eye". I've said it before but here it is again......I'm certain that you'd produce good work with a cardboard disposable camera, but yes to be able to use an M is a joy, what the camera looks like is irrelevant.

That's very kind, Peter - and it means a lot to me, thank you. And yes, it's all been said about having a fake brassy black paint M camera, but I'll cheerfully admit to owning one. It's something of a guilty pleasure, and not my only film Leica. Cheers!

Oops!......sorry Colin I didn't realise you had that done on the M2 deliberately, I just assumed that as you seem to be seriously working a camera all the time it was regular wear and tear......So I got that wrong but anyway the other sentiments remain, I look forward to viewing more of your work.

Cheers, Peter. You're half right, it's a bit of both. Some 'wear' put on by Kanto, and accelerated over time with genuine use. The paint they applied is not very hard wearing. 👍

Recently picked up an M3 from Peter Loy that had a couple of flecks out of the original vulcanite. Sent it to Camera Obscura here in the UK for a CLA and decided to get it re-skinned in an olive green. Paired here with a Cooph strap. Such a beautiful camera. Hope not too blasphemous to those who like the classic colours!

(And anyone looking for CLA/re-skinning work in the UK, Alexander at Camera Obscura got it turned around in about a fortnight for me, so that I had it in time for Christmas. Incredible work and timeline.)
