Greetings, I am in the market to purchase a used digital M.  While I am dithering and looking around for a good one to buy, should I get the M lenses coded, and by whom - Leica USA? I recall they used to do it and I've been out the loop for years now.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • iriscaddis changed the title to Coding M-lenses for used M-P 240 , or later?

If you select to buy your camera from an approved Leica dealer, that will open the door to future support and lots of advice. It may cost a little more, but you will have a warranty for it. An M body will work with uncoded lenses, but most users choose to code them. Leica almost  certainly will do it for you. Consult your dealer; he might know of local alternative solutions.

I guess that you are not that far from Los Angeles, you could visit the Leica store there and get much information.

Coded lenses are very convenient but uncoded lenses work just fine, you just have to remember to select them when mounting the lens. Easy enough to use one of the settings to make that quite easy. Not all old lenses can be coded, for example the 50 ‘Rigid’ cannot be coded by Leica.

As wda mentions, buying from a certified Leica dealer is probably the better way to make these purchases.
