It is quite annoying every time the firmware is updated, the file numbering resets to 1010000...!!!

I guess it would not be so difficult to keep the previous numbering just where it ended. Or at least provide that option.

Is there any way or trick to keep the sequence as it was after an update...?

Thanks...

Format your memory card. Put the memory card into your computer and copy over the last DNG you took that was correctly numbered. Put the card back in the camera and take a shot. It will start the numbering from there based on the DNG you put on the card.

Thanks but didn't work. There must be something else, or maybe it does just after upgrading and before taking the first pic, but that's not my case.

Thanks anyway... 🙏🙂

Maybe I had to reset the numbering in the camera menu before taking the shot. Can't remember exactly. And if I had been using a custom DNG prefix that was lost in the update, I had to set that first to match the prefix on the DNG I copied over.

Tried different things but nothing works... Leica should fix that I guess... if they want...

It doesn't quite work that way. Format the card in the camera, take a shot, put your card in the computer and  replace  the image number by the one you want to start with (e.g. the number of the last one in your files +1) . The camera will pick it up from there.

I also tried that, fist thing, and didn’t work... after formatting it creates two folders, one for pics, 101LEICA... tried to renumber folder and shot number, without success... just ignores that and with the next shot creates 101LEICA again... thanks for your comment... 🙏

Leica does wonderful things,  but little details like this go unnoticed, or ignored... giving the option to start fresh numbering or keeping the previous one after upgrading must not be that difficult to fix.

And missing consecutive numeration can be really annoying for many reasons..

You should not rename the folder only the image.

I did that, and the picture number takes the three first digits from the folder name. No matter if I put last shot 1020448 inside the same folder 101LEICA, the following shot is numbered 1010002.

And it doesn't matter if I delete 101LEICA, create 102LEICA and put inside 1020448... next thing to happen after first shoot is 101LEICA appaering again, with shot 1010001 inside.

I think the key is in the other folder, can't remeber now how it's named...

A slightly tedious workaround was explained by Magic back in February in a thread on Firmware 2.0

The file number went back to L1000000, which is annoying. That didn't/doesn't happen with the FW update at my M10.

In case anyone else is facing that problem - I tried to rename the folder and subsequently the file to the number +1 after the latest I took on the SD-card....didn't work.

The only way around it that I found so far is time consuming and annoying. Renaming the folder to the latest (in my case L107) and copying the latest file into it, did not work.

I renamed the folder back to L100 and copied the file L1000999.DNG into that folder on the SD-card. Then I removed the card from my Mac and put it into the Q2, took 2 shots and the camera created the folder L101 and the file L1010001.DNG.

I repeated these steps with the subsequently created folders until the Q2 created the folder L107. In here I copied the latest file I took, took again 1-2 shots and now the file numbers are back to where they were before the FW update.

Renaming the folder to L107 right from the start didn't work for me....

It lets you bump up the folder number by 1000 pictures at a time.

I have used this so far with each of the firmware upgrades, though as my number of folders increases it gets much more time consuming.

I figured out a solution that isn't too bad. Would be nice if Leica just allowed us to easily set the next number.

Here are the steps to what worked for me:

  1. Put the memory card on your computer
  2. In the DCIM folder create folders like this: 100LEICA, 101LEICA, 102LEICA ... until you are at the first the digits you need for the numbering. In my case it's 117LEICA and my most recent picture filename was Q1174321.DNG
  3. In the 100LEICA folder put a file named Q1009999.DNG (or whatever file pattern you are using)
  4. In the 117LEICA folder (or whatever your highest number folder is in your case) make sure the file of your last picture is there (again in my case it's Q1174321.DNG)
  5. Now put the memory card in your camera
  6. Take a picture. It will create the new picture as Q1174322.DNG in the 117LEICA folder.
  7. If you want to clean up your memory card you can remove all the XXXLEICA folders except for the highest number one.

This worked for me and saved me the time of doing the more time-consuming process that Cheesehead posted in #10. I hope it works for you!

Good procedure, thanks… 👌👌

I read some other post, suggesting to copy and update the firmware on a different memory card, and then put the original you’re using back in your camera and continue shooting… can’t locate that post now, but worth to try…

I've tried it but didn't worked as expected. Folder was L107 (which I kept with last image in it), I've created L100 to L106 with L10X0999.DNG in each one, then took a picture and it created a new L108 folder 😖 Then I've tried to fix that and now I'm with L111 😭
And I can't downgrade or flash again the firmware. Factory reset or number reset didn't help.
