rhl-ferndale Posted August 14, 2021 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2021 (edited) Thanks for starting this, Vikas! My wife Linn and I have moved several times since 2017–from Eureka to Ferndale in Humboldt County off Highway 101 in Northern California; to the Sandhills of North Carolina in 2019; and this summer to Winston Salem NC. Wherever we live, we explore surrounding counties and towns and countryside on all sorts of roads, and talk about history, culture, local economies obvious and less visible, the democratic experiment, demographics and so on. The navigator reads Wikipedia articles from the phone (on Tory raids, when and where Highlanders or Moravians arrived, the northernmost range of alligators and water moccasins) between mapchecks. And we stop to photograph. Here are a few from Jackson Springs Day in 2019. The train depot/post office is now a museum, and residents as well as people who moved away decades ago have a picnic and games and music, and reminisce as they swat mosquitos. The heyday of Jackson Springs was long ago when local passenger trains ran, and doctors prescribed mineral spring treatments and rest cures and rocking on deep porches. Folks from the north simply sick of snow and cities and coal smoke moved south for milder winters. There was a hotel, and it was not far from where Mr Tufts with his Massachusetts soda fountain fortune had bought many thousands of acres of pine scrub from my great grandfather to build a golf resort now known as Pinehurst. It may be that my grandfather managed the Jackson Springs Hotel for a while, and my mother ran around the halls and grounds with her brother and sister, but they are all gone now, and I may have mixed up this mineral springs/rest cure hotel with one in another town. In any case, it burned down, and visitors stopped coming. Leica T, ZM 21 2.8 Welcome, dear visitor! rhl-ferndale Posted August 15, 2021 Share #3 Posted August 15, 2021 On what was once the baggage/freight dock of the Jackson Springs depot/PO, a restrained white country gospel. The older men never smiled, and from their somber demeanor the younger musicians took their cue, though the fiddler inserted a bluegrass cadenza now and again. It’s hard to keep up with the daily drizzle of pine needles on a roof like this when the practical, original reasons for the building are long gone, and the small scattered community uses it not many days of the year. Unless it becomes a bedroom community for more retirees to the golf resort lifestyle, it’s not hard to imagine the little depot gradually engulfed by the scrub that chokes the nearby creek banks, as its preservationists age out of the ability to keep up, and the generation without an agricultural tie to acreage move on, as so many have, to bigger towns with better schools and services. rhl-ferndale Posted August 16, 2021 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2021 Vikas kindly launched this thread in response to a multi person conversation in the Monochrom M thread about the pleasures and narrative possibilities of traveling—off the speeded-up boredoms of interstates, motorways, autostrade, auotbahns. Vikas and I have posted a few things. I invite others to add their road trips, photographic, anecdotal, essayistic, cherished or dreadful. If, as the proverb has it, a picture is worth a thousand words, that can work both ways. The photographs don’t always have to tell the story in their sign language. I for one would like to hear some voices on the page in accompaniment of this or that photo-documented trip.

Love these pictures. Mark of transitions in life. New things that come along are not always worse, and I guess one must make the best of what one can’t change! _Michael Posted August 16, 2021 Share #8 Posted August 16, 2021 This should be a fun thread. - I'll add more here for sure, and with more details but let's start with a couple I have handy - This is from a short visit and drive through Badlands National Park in May of this year. Wife and I took a cross-country trip with some specific objectives outside of photography, but that was indeed always a part of the plan. We did a lot of what we call "speed touring" all National Lampoons Vacation style. Stop, quick look, quick pic, let's go. On to the next one. Welcome, dear visitor! _Michael Posted August 16, 2021 Share #9 Posted August 16, 2021 This one is outside of Monument Valley when we turned down a random dirt road. Wind was blowing pretty strong so I wasn't out in in very long with the dirt and dust, but managed a few frames. I like this one. Welcome, dear visitor! _Michael Posted August 17, 2021 Share #10 Posted August 17, 2021 (edited) As you are getting closer to the well-known portion of Monument Valley there are a number of Native American run souvenir stands. They were all closed as it was almost dark and the weather was less than pleasant. I made a quick stop in the parking lot and found this scene behind it looking to the west. I've showed this to a couple people and I don't think it has had the impact I thought it might, but I really like the scale of the person sitting in the chair against the massive open desert. This stop was not far from what's called Forrest Gump Point. Leica Q 28mm @ f/1.7 Welcome, dear visitor! _Michael Posted August 17, 2021 Share #11 Posted August 17, 2021 Moving deeper into the park, the sun was well under the horizon. The wife was tired, and didn't wan tot keep hanging out in the dust-filled wind. Made a quick stop along the road when I spotted this view and the great clouds. The color version actually has a little blue sky in the top of frame that surprised me. Leica Q, ISO 100, F/5.6 Welcome, dear visitor! (I’m one of the right people.) Who will admire this? Anyone who appreciates how small (and precious, and thoughtful) we are in such immensities; anyone who appreciates basin and range, landmarks looming or receding in haze; anyone who can be happy with clouds breaking like waves overhead. And so on. Especially admirable, the person seated diagonally opposite to the open sky, as though all of this is a museum panorama (as it essentially is).

Michael, although it’s generally true for all photographs on the forum, yours in particular really benefit from clicking on them to see them at better resolution. The guy sitting there really become easier to see and appreciate.

It is so easy to just feel "small" while in the desert regions.
_Michael Posted August 23, 2021 Share #15 Posted August 23, 2021 Need to breathe some life into this thread...The images previously posted were towards the end of our journey. I imagine I'll be all over the places with my postings and timeline anyway, but... After wanting to visit for a very long time, we had a chance to see Mount Rushmore. It really is an incredible sculpture and story. 4 heads, 60' tall created over a 12 year period completed in 1934. We visited late in the day and watched the transitions from natural light to the floods. Welcome, dear visitor! _Michael Posted August 23, 2021 Share #16 Posted August 23, 2021 Still in the west, the northern portion of Petrified Forest National Park is easily accessible from Hwy 40 and old Route 66. Another edition of speed touring we didn't have long there, and this was not the optimal part of day for photos. I really want to get back and explore the areas in the canyons. The pano is a vista from a stop not far from the entrance. I always like coming across US Geological survey markers. This was one located right next to the historic Painted Desert Inn which was built of petrified wood and other native stone. The latter 2 in the next posts. Welcome, dear visitor! rhl-ferndale Posted September 15, 2021 Share #19 Posted September 15, 2021 The quest for fresh tomatoes and peaches at this time of year always leads away from city supermarkets, often to a country store like this, outside Mocksville NC. We had already obtained all we needed for a tomato caprese and peach galettes (to entertain cousins newly transplanted from California) at a farm stand in a small town closer to Winston Salem. But we wanted to keep driving, and so crossed the Yadkin River to see Mocksville, the Davie County seat. I photographed this store because it persists , despite its loss of gas pumps, as an old fashioned rural convenience store—cigarettes, beer, snacks, cardboard bins of late season veggies and fruits from the mountains. The bales of “pine needles” are used as a decorative weed-suppressing straw mulch. I also photographed it because it bears my younger brother’s nickname, and he may be amused to imagine returning from Oregon (as I did two years ago) to run a country store. But he’s a painter and will likely be content to paint it. Welcome, dear visitor! rhl-ferndale Posted September 15, 2021 Share #20 Posted September 15, 2021 A hundred yards down US 158, another old building that also might have once served as a gas station, with its covered drive-up entrance. The height of unmown grass and weeds suggests it was closed earlier this year. Maybe after Snooks died no one wanted to take over. Or maybe someone did, but their recipes or cooking wasn’t as good as the original. Barbecue is so popular in the South, especially the rural South, that to see a decent old BBQ business gone to weeds is a bit of a shock. Snooks is another family nickname. Aunt Snooks was my aunt by marriage—as a child, I never heard her real name used, and though I finally asked what it was, I have long since forgotten her given name which could never compete with the amusing affection of the nickname. She would have enjoyed seeing her name on a roadside BBQ— even now as the weeds take over—because it would mean there was at least one more Snooks in the world. They might have enjoyed a barbecue platter together, with slaw and hush puppies and sweet tea. Especially after her husband’s alcoholism killed him and ended her good-humored but frazzled obligation to put up with his outbursts, deliriums and collapses. Welcome, dear visitor!
